Separate interference order from finite-width brightness

A principal interference direction is a phase condition, not a guarantee of a bright observed spot. Equal coherent slits separated by d have constructive path differences d sinθ=mλ and destructive differences (m+1/2)λ. The angle is measured from the central axis. A screen perpendicular to that axis at distance L records y=L tanθ, whereas y≈Lmλ/d adds a small-angle approximation.

Learning outcome: Compute order1 and4 locations for two wavelengths, retaining the approximation error separately from the envelope factor. Predict the first two-slit dark direction and explain why it differs from a single-slit first zero. Propose which geometry change would move a missing order.

Starting recap

Use normal-based angles, signed conjugate distances and explicit optical-path/reflection phases. Separate geometric direction, amplitude and energy; preserve focal and critical boundaries.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At λ=600 nm, order1 has sinθ=.03 and exact screen position on a2 m screen is2(.03)/√(1−.03²)≈.0600270 m. The small-angle value is .0600000 m. Order4 has sinθ=.12 but w sinθ=600 nm, so the ideal envelope vanishes there.

An interference condition can coincide with a diffraction zero; an allowed geometric order is not necessarily bright.

Equal coherent two-slit maxima have d sin(theta)=m lambda, and minima have (m+1/2)lambda. A finite slit width supplies a squared-sinc envelope with zeros w sin(theta)=p lambda. Since d/w=4, principal order4 coincides with the first envelope zero. Increasing coherent slit count sharpens principal peaks under the ideal grating model but does not remove this same finite-width zero. L tan(theta) is exact screen geometry within the far-field angular model, not a replacement for its approximation assumptions.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Define the optical model

A principal interference direction is a phase condition, not a guarantee of a bright observed spot. Equal coherent slits separated by d have constructive path differences d sinθ=mλ and destructive differences (m+1/2)λ. The angle is measured from the central axis. A screen perpendicular to that axis at distance L records y=L tanθ, whereas y≈Lmλ/d adds a small-angle approximation.

Build the signed account

Each slit also has a finite width w, producing a single-slit envelope with zeros w sinθ=pλ for nonzero integer p. At a principal interference order, the envelope factor is [sinβ/β]² with β=πw sinθ/λ and center limit one. In this packet d=20 µm and w=5 µm, so order m=4 coincides with the first envelope zero. It is a missing principal order, not a failure of the path-difference equation.

Test the limits and evidence

More equally spaced coherent slits sharpen principal grating maxima, but the same finite-width envelope can still suppress an order. The displayed order locations use exact screen geometry inside a far-field angular approximation; this does not make the complete model exact for arbitrary near screens or finite sources. Wavelength, separation and width have separate roles. No laser, bright source or actual optical alignment is requested.

Worked original case

Predict and investigate

Changed-case practice

Try the changed case before feedback

For λ=500 nm and d=20 µm, find the sine of the first two-slit dark angle.

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original text and numerical cases checked 30 October 2026 against the primary explanation. All optical activity is virtual: no laser, sunlight viewing, eye exposure, physical lens alignment or device construction is requested. Public feedback is not independent mastery; retain first calculations, critique and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Apply

With center spacing20 µm and slit width5 µm, why is principal order4 missing?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which independent observation would reject the approximation, sign convention or calibration premise rather than merely refit it?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
