Keep source potential separate from pair energy

Potential is a scalar source property at a point, with units joules per coulomb. The potential created by several point charges is the signed sum kQ_i/r_i. Multiplying that potential by a newly introduced passive charge gives its interaction energy with those sources. It does not automatically include energy already stored in interactions among the original sources.

Learning outcome: Compare third charges −3,0,+3 nC at one geometry. Retain first-pair energy and third-insertion work separately. Then double L. Explain why removing the third charge leaves nonzero first-pair energy even though the third insertion term vanishes.

Starting recap

Use signed charge, common coordinate axes, SI units, vector components and algebraic ratios. Separate a source field from probe force and a fitted parameter from independently tested evidence.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At a=−1 nC and L=2 m, the dimensionless pair coefficient is 2−2−1/√2=−1/√2. The total is −k×10⁻¹⁸/(2√2)≈−3.17757941 nJ. The first positive pair stores positive energy, but adding the negative charge releases a larger amount.

Source potential at a site is not the same object as total interaction energy of all charges.

The three distances are L, L and sqrt(2)L. Sum each pair once. Adding the third charge costs q3 times the potential of the first two, not its own singular self-potential. Negative assembly work means energy is released under the quasistatic external convention. Equal total charge does not determine interaction energy, which also depends on geometry and pair products.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Define the source and measurement boundary

Potential is a scalar source property at a point, with units joules per coulomb. The potential created by several point charges is the signed sum kQ_i/r_i. Multiplying that potential by a newly introduced passive charge gives its interaction energy with those sources. It does not automatically include energy already stored in interactions among the original sources.

Derive the quantitative comparison

In this triangle, +2 nC is at (0,0), +1 nC at (L,0) and q3=a nC at (0,L). The first pair contributes 2k×10⁻¹⁸/L joules. The third-site potential before insertion is k×10⁻⁹[2+1/√2]/L volts. Adding q3 therefore contributes k×10⁻¹⁸[2a+a/√2]/L joules. Sum the three unordered pairs once; counting the energy of every charge in the potential of all the others would count each pair twice.

Test an alternative before claiming identification

Quasistatic external assembly work equals the interaction-energy change when final kinetic energy is negligible. Negative work means an external agent could extract energy under that idealization, not that a negative amount of physical energy was created. Doubling all separations halves every pair term. Total net charge alone does not determine energy: equal totals can have different pair products and geometry. The source self-energy at its own location is excluded, and infinity is the reference for this localized configuration.

Worked original case

Changed-case practice

Try the changed case before feedback

Set q3=0 and L=3 m. Express total interaction energy as the dimensionless ratio U/[k(1 nC)²/(1 m)].

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and evidence boundary

Original teaching, numerical cases and diagrams checked 30 October 2026 against the relevant primary textbook explanation. No textbook exercise, image or passage is reproduced. These are bounded synthetic records, not observed apparatus. No charging, wiring, capacitor handling, medical application or safety certification is requested. Preserve first predictions, contrasting settings and critiques in the course evidence workspace; public feedback is not independent mastery or performed laboratory time.

Apply

In the total energy of three distinct point charges, each unordered pair appears:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which independent observation could reject this model rather than merely refit its parameters?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
