Add pressure phase before squaring

Two same-frequency pressure signals can reinforce or cancel locally. Let the first peak pressure amplitude be 1 Pa and the second be b Pa. Their relative phase is φ=2πΔr/λ when their source phases match and the only phase difference comes from a path-length difference Δr in a uniform medium. Local amplitudes already include any unequal spreading or attenuation.

Learning outcome: Predict values at path differences 0,.25,.5,1 wavelengths for b=.5 and 1. Retain pressure amplitude and its square separately. Explain why halving a pressure amplitude reduces its mean-square by four, and why cancellation at one point is not a whole-field energy balance.

Starting recap

Separate local oscillation from propagation, amplitude from its square, and a calibration fit from a fresh prediction. Use declared phase, medium frame and boundary conditions.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At b=.5 and Δr/λ=.5, the resultant peak pressure is .5 Pa and the normalized mean-square is .25. At the same amplitude ratio with zero phase difference, these become 1.5 Pa and 2.25. At b=1 and half a wavelength, the ideal local cancellation is exactly zero.

A half-cycle phase difference gives complete cancellation only when the local amplitudes match.

Add the two pressure phasors, then square their resultant magnitude: 1+b²+2b cos(phi). The equivalent nonnegative form avoids a negative round-off at exact cancellation. Path phase assumes equal source phase and a uniform propagation wavelength. In a multidirectional or standing-wave field this local pressure statistic alone does not determine net vector energy flow; do not label it unconditionally as transmitted acoustic power.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Define the observable

Two same-frequency pressure signals can reinforce or cancel locally. Let the first peak pressure amplitude be 1 Pa and the second be b Pa. Their relative phase is φ=2πΔr/λ when their source phases match and the only phase difference comes from a path-length difference Δr in a uniform medium. Local amplitudes already include any unequal spreading or attenuation.

Build the bounded model

The squared resultant peak amplitude is 1+b²+2b cosφ. Dividing local mean-square pressure by that of the first signal gives this same dimensionless ratio, because both sinusoidal mean squares include the factor one half. At an integer wavelength path difference the amplitudes add; at a half-integer difference they subtract. Complete cancellation requires both opposite phase and equal local amplitudes, not merely a half-wavelength path difference.

Interpret the evidence

A local pressure minimum is not proof that acoustic energy has vanished everywhere. Interference redistributes a field, and in a multidirectional or standing-wave configuration pressure alone does not specify net vector energy flux. The workbench therefore labels its result as normalized local mean-square pressure rather than universally calling it transmitted intensity. This silent mathematical superposition is not a noise-cancellation installation, an exposure protocol or a claim that the signal is inaudible.

Worked original case

At b=.5 and Δr/λ=.5, the resultant peak pressure is .5 Pa and the normalized mean-square is .25. At the same amplitude ratio with zero phase difference, these become 1.5 Pa and 2.25. At b=1 and half a wavelength, the ideal local cancellation is exactly zero.

Predict and investigate

Predict values at path differences 0,.25,.5,1 wavelengths for b=.5 and 1. Retain pressure amplitude and its square separately. Explain why halving a pressure amplitude reduces its mean-square by four, and why cancellation at one point is not a whole-field energy balance.

Changed-case practice

Try the changed case before feedback

At equal local amplitudes and a quarter-wavelength path difference, find the normalized local mean-square pressure.

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original prose and cases checked 30 October 2026 against the primary source. These are silent, synthetic wave models: no sound playback, exposure prescription, hearing test or physical apparatus is requested. A correct public number is not independent mastery; retain first explanations and a changed-case review in the course evidence workspace.

Apply

With amplitude ratio .5 and a half-wavelength path difference, what is the normalized local mean-square pressure?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which fresh observation separates a failed physical model from a fitted calibration parameter?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
