Reflect a direction about the oriented normal

The law of reflection compares angles with a surface normal, not with the surface itself. A normal is perpendicular to the local reflecting surface. In the displayed plane, the incoming direction is u=(sinβ,−cosβ), while the outward normal is n=(sinα,cosα). The incoming arrow points toward the surface, so its outward-facing angle is measured using −u. A ray diagram that uses u directly as the outward incident arm can accidentally replace an angle by its supplement.

Learning outcome: Keep β=30° and compare α=−10°,0°,10°. Draw the normal before labeling angles and retain the incoming/outgoing vectors. Separately place a virtual plane-mirror object 3 cm in front and predict its image location and orientation.

Starting recap

Use normal-based angles, signed conjugate distances and explicit optical-path/reflection phases. Separate geometric direction, amplitude and energy; preserve focal and critical boundaries.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With β=30° and α=10°, incidence is 40° from the normal. The outgoing direction is 50° from upward vertical, with components (sin50°,cos50°). Its length remains one. Relative to the α=0 case the mirror normal turned 10° but the reflected ray turned 20°.

Reflection reverses the normal direction component and preserves the tangent component.

For unit incoming u and unit normal n, outgoing v=u−2(u dot n)n. The incident ray travels toward the surface, so the angle to the outward normal uses −u. Here incidence is alpha+beta on the bounded nonnegative grid combination; the outgoing angle from upward vertical is 2alpha+beta. Rotating the normal by an increment rotates the reflected direction by twice that increment while the incident direction stays fixed. This is geometric reflection, not a diffraction or rough-surface model.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Define the optical model

The law of reflection compares angles with a surface normal, not with the surface itself. A normal is perpendicular to the local reflecting surface. In the displayed plane, the incoming direction is u=(sinβ,−cosβ), while the outward normal is n=(sinα,cosα). The incoming arrow points toward the surface, so its outward-facing angle is measured using −u. A ray diagram that uses u directly as the outward incident arm can accidentally replace an angle by its supplement.

Build the signed account

Reflection keeps the tangent component of direction and reverses the normal component. For unit u and n this is v=u−2(u dot n)n. This supplied vector form is an algebraic way of applying equal incidence/reflection angles. Over the bounded choices, the incidence angle is α+β and the outgoing inclination from upward vertical is 2α+β. Rotating the surface and normal by ten degrees therefore turns the reflected direction by twenty degrees when the incoming direction remains fixed.

Test the limits and evidence

A plane mirror forms an image by backward extensions of reflected rays: the virtual image is as far behind the plane as the object is in front, with unchanged transverse size. Light need not actually pass through that image location. This claim assumes a flat specular surface and geometric optics; a rough surface scatters directions, and small apertures introduce diffraction. All diagrams are virtual. No mirror, sunlight, laser or eye-viewing experiment is requested.

Worked original case

With β=30° and α=10°, incidence is 40° from the normal. The outgoing direction is 50° from upward vertical, with components (sin50°,cos50°). Its length remains one. Relative to the α=0 case the mirror normal turned 10° but the reflected ray turned 20°.

Predict and investigate

Keep β=30° and compare α=−10°,0°,10°. Draw the normal before labeling angles and retain the incoming/outgoing vectors. Separately place a virtual plane-mirror object 3 cm in front and predict its image location and orientation.

Changed-case practice

Try the changed case before feedback

An incoming ray has β=40° and the normal has α=−10° in the stated convention. Find the reflected inclination from upward vertical in degrees.

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original text and numerical cases checked 30 October 2026 against the primary explanation. All optical activity is virtual: no laser, sunlight viewing, eye exposure, physical lens alignment or device construction is requested. Public feedback is not independent mastery; retain first calculations, critique and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Apply

With a fixed incident ray, a 10° rotation of a flat mirror changes the reflected direction by:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which independent observation would reject the approximation, sign convention or calibration premise rather than merely refit it?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
