Use an oriented normal in a signed flux-change account

Magnetic flux through a flat surface in a uniform field is Φ=BAcosθ, with θ measured from the oriented surface normal. Flux is signed; it is not simply field magnitude times an unlabeled area. The normal also fixes a positive boundary circulation by the right-hand rule. Reversing that convention reverses both reported flux and emf signs without changing the physical event.

Learning outcome: Compare normal angles0,60,90,120 degrees and two durations. Retain initial/final signed flux before computing emf. Then on paper hold B=.2 T and rotate one .02 m² turn from aligned to perpendicular: flux changes by−.004 Wb rather than zero.

Starting recap

Use a right-handed coordinate system, oriented surface normal, signed charge/current and declared energy boundary. Separate an entry force from a trajectory, emf from current, and rms from signed average.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At duration .4 s and θ=60 degrees, linkage change is .06 Wb turn, so emf is −.15 V. At120 degrees the cosine reverses sign and emf is +.15 V. At90 degrees it is zero.

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Stationary 30-turn coil area .02 m². Uniform field magnitude rises linearly from .1 to .3 T at fixed direction. Positive circulation follows the right-hand rule from the chosen normal. Mean emf equals constant emf within this linear interval; no current without a specified closed circuit.

Flux uses the component along the oriented area normal; a stronger field can still produce zero flux change at ninety degrees.

Phi=BAcosθ and mean emf=−N DeltaPhi/Delta t, with positive circulation tied to the normal by a right-hand rule. The minus sign opposes the flux change, not necessarily the existing magnetic field. Reversing the chosen normal reverses both reported flux and circulation sign without changing the physical event. An induced emf can exist in an open circuit with no sustained conduction current.

Understand

Define vectors, source and system boundary

Magnetic flux through a flat surface in a uniform field is Φ=BAcosθ, with θ measured from the oriented surface normal. Flux is signed; it is not simply field magnitude times an unlabeled area. The normal also fixes a positive boundary circulation by the right-hand rule. Reversing that convention reverses both reported flux and emf signs without changing the physical event.

Derive the quantitative comparison

The stationary coil has30 turns and area .02 m². Field magnitude rises linearly from .1 to .3 T over the selected duration while direction and coil orientation remain fixed. Flux-linkage change is30(.02)(.2)cosθ, and mean emf is its negative divided by duration. Because the change is linear, this average equals the constant emf within the interval. At exactly90 degrees the flux change is exactly zero, not a small residual from a rounded cosine.

Separate physical evidence from a model extension

Lenz direction opposes the change in flux, not always the existing field. A decreasing positive flux produces the opposite emf sign from an increasing positive flux. Rotating a coil or changing its area can also change flux without changing field magnitude. Emf can exist in an open loop even when no sustained conduction current flows; current requires a specified circuit resistance and continuity. These are virtual sign conventions, not a coil-handling procedure.

Worked original case

At duration .4 s and θ=60 degrees, linkage change is .06 Wb turn, so emf is −.15 V. At120 degrees the cosine reverses sign and emf is +.15 V. At90 degrees it is zero.

Compare normal angles0,60,90,120 degrees and two durations. Retain initial/final signed flux before computing emf. Then on paper hold B=.2 T and rotate one .02 m² turn from aligned to perpendicular: flux changes by−.004 Wb rather than zero.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
