Separate energy calibration from source identification

A measured spectrum first needs a response model. This fictional instrument indicates y=gE+b for true transition energy E, common gain g and baseline b. Independently stipulated reference energies2 and4 eV provide two equations for two response parameters. Their difference removes b, giving g=(y4−y2)/2; then b=y2−2g. A reference must be known independently of the instrument being calibrated, otherwise the algebra merely restates its own output.

Learning outcome: Vary gain and offset separately, using only the first two references. Freeze the third prediction before checking. Describe one independent calibration failure that a same-generator perfect fit cannot exclude.

For gain 1.05 and offset 0.1 eV, the2 and4 eV references indicate2.2 and4.3 eV. Their difference recovers gain 1.05 and offset 0.1. The unused6 eV reference should indicate6.4 eV. An unknown indication3.25 eV corresponds to 3 eV, not3.25 eV.

Calibrate a line-energy indication before inferring an unknown

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Fictitious reference transitions have independently stipulated energies 2 and 4 eV. Indicated energy y=gE+b. Use those two only for calibration; a fresh 6 eV reference tests the affine response. An unknown source has true 3 eV in this revealed generator, not a real element identification.

Two known references identify an affine response, but only independent unused evidence tests that assumption.

Differences remove the offset: gain=(y4−y2)/(4−2). Then offset=y2−2gain and unknown energy=(yunknown−offset)/gain. The third known line was not used to calibrate. The unknown plotted at its inferred energy is not an additional calibration check. A shared bias in reference energies or nonlinearity outside their span remains a possible failure; agreement with the revealed synthetic generator is not a real instrument certification.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

State the event and measurement model

A measured spectrum first needs a response model. This fictional instrument indicates y=gE+b for true transition energy E, common gain g and baseline b. Independently stipulated reference energies2 and4 eV provide two equations for two response parameters. Their difference removes b, giving g=(y4−y2)/2; then b=y2−2g. A reference must be known independently of the instrument being calibrated, otherwise the algebra merely restates its own output.

Reconcile the quantitative evidence

After freezing that calibration, a new6 eV reference is unused validation of the affine response. An unknown-source indication is inverted with E=(yunknown−b)/g. Plotting that unknown at its inferred energy does not create another independent standard: its position was calculated using the fit. A changed offset and a changed gain affect an unknown differently, so subtracting a baseline alone is not a general calibration.

Preserve limits and alternative explanations

The source energies here are invented teaching values rather than named atomic lines. Identifying a real element would require a pattern, justified wavelength or energy calibration, transition context and possible competing sources. A shared error in both reference standards can survive a perfect same-family fit. Likewise, agreement at 6 eV does not prove linearity outside the tested span or rule out drift. This category uses an algebraic response model to connect quantized-energy reasoning to earlier field and optical calibration work without pretending synthetic data are independent physical measurements.

Changed-case practice

Try the changed case before feedback

References2 and4 eV indicate2.1 and4.5 eV. An unknown indicates3.3 eV. Find its inferred energy in eV.

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original cases checked 31 October 2026 against the primary explanation. These are bounded virtual models, not instructions to illuminate, accelerate, collect or expose real material. No real laboratory participation, detector certification, personal medical conclusion or independent mastery is claimed. Keep first work, critique, revision and genuinely new assigned evidence separately from public practice.

Apply

After fitting gain and offset from independently known2 and4 eV references, which is an unused response test?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which independent observation would reject the selected model or calibration premise, and which quantity is not identified by these records?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
