Separate spherical spreading from background intensity

An ideal isotropic source distributes acoustic power over a sphere of area 4πr², so its source-only intensity is P/(4πr²). A separate uniform incoherent background adds intensity, giving I(r)=S/r²+B when S is the source intensity at one metre. This sum assumes the sources are uncorrelated; coherent waves must instead have their pressure amplitudes and phases combined.

Learning outcome: Fit source strength and background from the first two radii, freeze the third-radius prediction and only then reveal it. Repeat with zero background and compare level drops. Propose one fresh observation that could detect a directional rather than isotropic source.

Starting recap

Separate local oscillation from propagation, amplitude from its square, and a calibration fit from a fresh prediction. Use declared phase, medium frame and boundary conditions.

Try

For S=3 µW/m² and B=1 µW/m², readings are 4 and 1.75 µW/m². Their difference 2.25 recovers S=3 and B=1. The fresh 3 m prediction is 4/3 µW/m², and isotropic power is 12π µW. The level difference is 10 log10(1.75/4)≈−3.59022 dB, not −6.02 dB.

Subtract the background before testing inverse-square spreading; logarithmic levels do not add linearly.

I(r)=S/r²+B gives S=4(I1−I2)/3 and B=I1−S for radii 1 and 2 m. Isotropic power is 4pi S after converting micro-units. Independent incoherent intensities add; coherent pressures must be combined before squaring. A constant background makes the measured level drop less than 6.0206 dB when distance doubles. A modeled level is not a safety limit, a hearing test or a promise about subjective loudness.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Define the observable

An ideal isotropic source distributes acoustic power over a sphere of area 4πr², so its source-only intensity is P/(4πr²). A separate uniform incoherent background adds intensity, giving I(r)=S/r²+B when S is the source intensity at one metre. This sum assumes the sources are uncorrelated; coherent waves must instead have their pressure amplitudes and phases combined.

Build the bounded model

Two measurements at radii 1 and 2 m give I1=S+B and I2=S/4+B. Subtract to remove B, then recover S=4(I1−I2)/3 and B=I1−S. The fitted model predicts a fresh reading at 3 m as S/9+B. Using both calibration readings to fit the two parameters is not independent validation; the third reading is a distinct test only if its value was withheld before prediction.

Interpret the evidence

Intensity level is 10 log10(I/I0), with the stated reference I0=10⁻¹² W/m². Levels in decibels cannot be added as ordinary intensities. Doubling distance reduces a pure inverse-square source by about 6.02 dB, but a nonzero uniform background makes the total drop smaller. The reference is a conventional comparison, not a personal threshold, a safety recommendation or a measure of perceived loudness. Absorption, reflections, directionality and an instrument gain error are excluded from this particular inference.

Worked original case

For S=3 µW/m² and B=1 µW/m², readings are 4 and 1.75 µW/m². Their difference 2.25 recovers S=3 and B=1. The fresh 3 m prediction is 4/3 µW/m², and isotropic power is 12π µW. The level difference is 10 log10(1.75/4)≈−3.59022 dB, not −6.02 dB.

Predict and investigate

Fit source strength and background from the first two radii, freeze the third-radius prediction and only then reveal it. Repeat with zero background and compare level drops. Propose one fresh observation that could detect a directional rather than isotropic source.

Changed-case practice

Try the changed case before feedback

Two indications are 6 and 3 µW/m² at 1 and 2 m. Find the inferred background in µW/m².

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original prose and cases checked 30 October 2026 against the primary source. These are silent, synthetic wave models: no sound playback, exposure prescription, hearing test or physical apparatus is requested. A correct public number is not independent mastery; retain first explanations and a changed-case review in the course evidence workspace.

Apply

Why is the total intensity drop from 1 to 2 m smaller than a factor of four when the background is positive?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which fresh observation separates a failed physical model from a fitted calibration parameter?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.
