SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Reproduce an analysis without overwriting its source records

A reproducible environmental analysis needs identifiable records, units, provenance and a declared transformation recipe. An edited spreadsheet without the original values cannot show what changed. Keeping raw data separate from corrected values allows another analyst to recover the result and challenge its assumptions.

Learning outcome: Download and inspect the raw/corrected CSV. Recompute each contrast from record IDs, toggle only the documented correction, then convert units. Preserve the packet identity and an explicit analysis recipe in the notebook.

Starting recap

Preserve packet identity, independent units, analysis recipe, outcome constraints and review authority; distinguish scientific uncertainty from stakeholder value choices.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

BASIN-P3-T has before 28, raw after 30 and corrected after 28 mg/L. Its comparison changes 26→28, so the corrected contrast is(28−28)−(28−26)=−2. Across four pairs the mean changes from−2 to−2.5 mg/L.

Reproduce a correction from a versioned data packet

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original packet cenv-basin-pairs@1 contains eight sites in four pairs. Only BASIN-P3-T after-period reading has independently known +2 mg/L offset. Preserve raw values; corrected=raw−offset. Unit conversion to µg/L multiplies every concentration/difference by 1000, not just selected rows.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Before/after are representative interval means, not technical replicates. Calibration packet stipulates a +2 mg/L after-period sensor offset only for BASIN-P3-T; no uncertainty is supplied for that correction.

The CSV is a fictional teaching dataset, not actual field observations. Preserve its identity and correction column in your report.

Raw records, correction provenance, units and analysis recipe are separate retained objects.

Export the versioned packet with raw and corrected columns. The known sensor offset changes one after reading, not every record or a chosen outlier. Converting units must preserve physical ratios and conclusions.

Predict, change one control, and retain contrasting captures. Reconstruct the analysis and decision rule before opening feedback. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Understand

Define the decision and evidence boundary

A reproducible environmental analysis needs identifiable records, units, provenance and a declared transformation recipe. An edited spreadsheet without the original values cannot show what changed. Keeping raw data separate from corrected values allows another analyst to recover the result and challenge its assumptions.

Reconstruct the transparent method

The original fictional packet cenv-basin-pairs@1 contains eight sites in four independently randomized treatment/comparison pairs. Before and after values are representative interval means, not repeated independent sites. Each record has a stable ID. A separate calibration statement stipulates a +2 mg/L after-reading offset only for BASIN-P3-T; the corrected value is 30−2=28.

Interpret the comparison

For each pair, compute treatment change minus comparison change. Raw contrasts are−4,−2,0,−2 mg/L, averaging−2. Correcting the known sensor offset gives−4,−2,−2,−2, averaging−2.5. The correction is not an outcome-driven deletion; its reason and affected record remain visible in the downloadable CSV.

Predeclare limitations and revision

Converting mg/L to µg/L multiplies all concentrations and differences by 1000. Counts, ratios and the physical interpretation do not change. Real calibration uncertainty, missing values and access controls would need explicit management. This packet is synthetic and must never be presented as a field study completed by the learner.

Worked original packet

BASIN-P3-T has before 28, raw after 30 and corrected after 28 mg/L. Its comparison changes 26→28, so the corrected contrast is(28−28)−(28−26)=−2. Across four pairs the mean changes from−2 to−2.5 mg/L.

Changed-case transfer

Express the corrected mean contrast in µg/L. Does the conversion create more independent evidence?

Feedback

−2.5 mg/L becomes−2500 µg/L. There are still eight sites and four independent pairs; unit conversion creates neither new observations nor stronger causal evidence.

Sources and evidence boundary

Original prose, dataset and numerical exercises. Primary method/mechanism source, checked 30 October 2026. The versioned packet is synthetic, not observed fieldwork. No treatment implementation, site access, pollutant handling or real management authorization is requested. Preserve first reasoning and critique in the course workspace.

A reproducible correction should preserve:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Express the corrected mean contrast in µg/L. Does the conversion create more independent evidence?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
