SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Defend original evidence, critique and an unfamiliar transfer

Audit a claimed concentration improvement across flow, load, energy and evidence provenance, then submit the full-course retained project and mixed written assessment.

Learning outcome: Preserve original plans and first report, respond to criterion-linked human critique, and distinguish public guided performance from independently assessed transfer and actual field competence.

Starting recap

A correct calculation is conditional evidence, not a complete causal or management conclusion. Retain every assumption, source and exposure declaration.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At water-volume ratio 1.5 and electricity factor 0.2, nutrient load falls from 20 to 18 kg/day, while electricity rises to 750 kWh/day and operational emissions remain 150 kg CO₂e/day. Concentration improves 40%, but neither load nor emissions improves by 40%.

Open the experiment

Predict

Does a 40% lower concentration establish a 40% lower delivered load and climate burden?

Experiment

Reconstruct two changed-volume/electricity-factor cases, identify a ranking reversal and defend what additional independent observations are needed before attributing the change to an intervention. Complete the retained course workspace without copying public feedback as original work.

Audit a concentration claim across water, load and energy boundaries

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original before water delivery 2000 m³/day, nutrient concentration 10 mg/L, pumping electricity intensity 0.25 kWh/m³ and electricity emissions 0.3 kg CO₂e/kWh. Supplied representative daily flow/concentration and operational boundary only, not causal field observations or lifecycle totals.

One improved concentration metric does not establish a complete environmental benefit.

Flow, electricity factor, useful service, return pathways and omitted lifecycle burdens all affect interpretation. The packet provides conditional accounting, not evidence that an intervention caused observed change or that all stakeholder constraints are satisfied.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Audit the claim across boundaries

A report announces a 40% lower nutrient concentration and calls it a 40% environmental improvement. The original before packet delivers 2000 m³ water/day at 10 mg nutrient/L. Its pumping intensity is 0.25 kWh/m³ and electricity factor 0.3 kg CO₂e/kWh. After concentration is 6 mg/L, but water volume and electricity factor may change.

Convert concentration and flow together: 1 mg/L equals 1 g/m³, so before load is 10 × 2000 / 1000 = 20 kg/day. Electricity is 500 kWh/day and operational climate burden 150 kg CO₂e/day. A concentration percentage alone cannot determine any of these other changes.

At water-volume ratio 1.5, after flow is 3000 m³/day and load 18 kg/day. Electricity becomes 750 kWh/day. At factor 0.2, emissions remain 150 kg CO₂e/day. Thus concentration falls 40%, load falls only 10% and the narrow operational climate burden is unchanged. This does not establish the direction of full lifecycle impact, basin depletion or ecological recovery.

Changed-case transfer

At water ratio 2 and electricity factor 0.1, after flow is 4000 m³/day, load 24 kg/day, electricity 1000 kWh/day and operational emissions 100 kg CO₂e/day. Load rises 4 kg/day even while concentration falls; operational climate burden falls 50. A qualified conclusion must retain both directions and the useful-service, representative-sampling and lifecycle assumptions.

These are supplied conditional comparisons, not evidence that a real intervention caused the changes. A counterfactual, independent observations and uncertainty analysis remain necessary. The lesson deliberately connects the earlier flow-weighting, service, carbon-currency and causal-evidence distinctions rather than introducing a new universal impact score.

Submit the full-course evidence portfolio

Open the College Environmental Science workspace. The final project requires:

  • The six retained original-plan responses, one from each category, with prior exposure and assistance declared. If a public answer was already viewed, preserve that fact rather than relabeling copied feedback as original work.
  • A real documented environmental problem with an openly licensed or permissioned dataset. Retain its URL, identity/version/date, license or permission basis, provenance, units, sampling frame, missingness, calibration limits and reproducible analysis. Cite the actual documented problem and explain whether these observations address it. Do not redistribute data without permission. The fictional packet below is method rehearsal, not a substitute for this outcome.
  • A source/outcome crosswalk identifying the boundary, independent unit, calculation, changed-case response and limitation for each module.
  • A reproducible analysis of cenv-basin-pairs@1, retaining raw values, the independently stipulated calibration correction, all four contrasts and the sixteen-label randomization reference. The packet is original synthetic data, not field observations.
  • A first defended district report that keeps scientific predictions, uncertainty, stakeholder values and authorized decisions separate. Preserve failed constraints and contradictory evidence.
  • A human, criterion-linked critique; one substantive revision explaining what changed and why; and a genuinely unfamiliar reviewer-assigned transfer recorded before the learner response.

The existing workspace retains task/project versions, first responses, public-feedback exposure and report history. It can record a reviewer’s declaration, but cannot certify that an assignment is truly unfamiliar or that a person actually performed fieldwork. An independent assessor must judge the evidence and provenance.

A documented problem: distinguish seasonal atmospheric CO₂ change from longer-term increase

Use NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory’s actual Mauna Loa atmospheric CO₂ record, not a simulated district. This bounded exercise compares 2020 with 2021; it does not estimate current conditions or a local policy effect. Read the documented monitoring problem and measurement context, the official download directory and original text dataset. The directory also offers CSV.

Download the traceable 24-row teaching subset and its provenance and reuse record. Packet cenv-noaa-mlo-2020-2021@1; source created 2026-10-09 13:08:07, checked 2026-10-30. Source-file SHA-256: 0ce4e7749217b4af2cca8e0bdf263856ad59b0a2946d4e98c7b22ccfbff21cad.

NOAA reuse terms permit public-domain government data reuse unless otherwise annotated. Credit NOAA GML and the cited providers, inspect any dataset-specific annotations, and do not imply endorsement or label your modified analysis official. The subset preserves every original column and numeric value for these two years; only selection, column labels and formatting change. No copied source images are used.

  1. Before opening feedback, retain the question, source identity, access date, terms, selected years, exclusions and expected direction in the course project’s original report. Inspect all 24 year/month keys and preserve the original file separately.
  2. Audit the schema: dry-air mole fraction in ppm, monthly mean versus deseasonalized value, days, daily spread and monthly uncertainty. Read the header’s negative-value flags; none of this subset’s quality fields is negative. Do not treat a negative flag as a negative measured concentration.
  3. Calculate each equal-month annual mean and the twelve same-month differences. Compare their mean with the difference of annual means. Contrast the May-to-September 2021 change. State why a seasonal decrease does not by itself contradict a between-year increase.
  4. Keep sampling limits explicit: background-air selection at one high-altitude site is not a global surface average or local emissions inventory. Monthly/daily values are correlated; twelve months are not twelve independent experimental replicates. The wider record includes site changes and preliminary revisions; check metadata before extending the period.
  5. Retain your table, calculation recipe, interpretation and one rejected causal claim; request human critique. Then analyze a reviewer-selected new period or a separately justified licensed dataset. Explain which course climate, sampling and system-boundary mechanisms carry over and which district claims this remote atmospheric record cannot answer.

Compare the public reproducibility check after retaining your first analysis

Equal-month means are 414.213333 and 416.414167 ppm; the mean same-month difference is 2.200833 ppm. May-to-September 2021 changes by -5.83 ppm. These descriptive summaries use an explicit equal-month convention, not a claim to reproduce NOAA’s official annual estimator. They do not identify an emissions source, a pandemic effect or a district intervention effect.

Performing this supplied calculation is guided real-data practice. Independent source selection, justified reanalysis, human reasoning review and any required actual field competence remain separate learner evidence.

Completion means different things

All 55 planned destinations provide authored teaching, public practice and bounded investigations. Reading them or reproducing their calculations is guided execution, not automatically conceptual mastery, independent analysis, practical competence, institutional course credit or professional authorization.

If no suitable real dataset and analysis have been supplied, the real-data learner outcome remains unmet even after every synthetic calculation succeeds. Source selection alone is not analysis; a reviewer must evaluate the actual records, transformations and inference.

Real environmental work may require supervised sampling, site permissions, equipment training, ecological safeguards, data governance and applicable ethical or regulatory review. None has been performed by this virtual course. A learner who needs that practical outcome must supply appropriately supervised external evidence; it must not be simulated by checking a box.

A course-authored public worked answer establishes:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At water ratio 2 and electricity factor 0.1, reconstruct load and emissions and write a qualified conclusion. Preserve an unfamiliar reviewer-assigned case separately from this public practice.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
