Distinguish a residual recharge estimate from an independent observation
A water budget relates inflows, outflows and storage change within a declared boundary. Precipitation can leave as evapotranspiration or surface export, remain in shallow storage, or cross a lower boundary as recharge. Recharge is an internal transfer if the aquifer is included in the larger system, but an output from the shallow-soil control volume used here.
Learning outcome: Compare ET 450 and 550 at export 200. Retain each boundary equation, then add a hypothetical omitted irrigation input and state how it changes the inferred term.
Starting recap
Specify the spatial, temporal and material boundary; keep observation, residual, model parameter and inferred mechanism distinct.
All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.
Try
At ET 500 and surface export 200 mm/year, recharge residual is 50 mm/year. Raising estimated ET by 50 reduces the residual to zero without any new recharge observation. At ET 600 and export 300, the residual is−150 and the stipulated balance needs investigation.

Can the residual change even when no recharge measurement has changed?
Experiment
Compare ET 450 and 550 at export 200. Retain each boundary equation, then add a hypothetical omitted irrigation input and state how it changes the inferred term.
Interpret recharge inferred as a residual
Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original basin: precipitation 800 mm/year, shallow soil storage increase 50 mm/year. Recharge across the lower boundary=P−ET−surface export−soil storage change. No lateral groundwater input or other omitted term in the stated model. Negative residual flags inconsistency or omitted processes, not automatically negative physical recharge.
Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.
| Quantity | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Precipitation | 800 | mm/year |
| Estimated evapotranspiration | 500 | mm/year |
| Surface export | 200 | mm/year |
| Shallow storage change | 50 | mm/year |
| Inferred lower-boundary recharge | 50 | mm/year |
A residual is inferred from other terms, not independently observed.
Uncertainty and covariance in the measured or estimated terms propagate into the residual. Soil-to-groundwater recharge is an internal transfer if the whole aquifer is also inside the system boundary.
Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.
With ET 550, export 200 and an independently documented irrigation input 100 mm/year, what residual follows? Which assumption changed?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.
Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.
Save a science backup or import one
Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.
A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.
Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.
Complete file sets and course backups
A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.
The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.
0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
