Plan precision using independent units rather than repeated readings

Monitoring design should connect a decision-relevant precision target to independent sampling units. Many readings from one sensor or one site can improve its measurement but do not automatically create new independent sites. Temporal autocorrelation and clustering can make the nominal record count overstate information.

Learning outcome: Compare n 4,8,16 at the same σ, then double σ. State what is held fixed and identify a clustering mechanism that would invalidate the independence assumption.

Starting recap

Preserve packet identity, independent units, analysis recipe, outcome constraints and review authority; distinguish scientific uncertainty from stakeholder value choices.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

At planned n 8 and known σ2 mg/L, standard error 2/√8≈0.7071 and half-width≈1.3859. A1 mg/L target needs ceiling(3.92²)=16 independent units. Eight technical repeats at one site do not meet that design.

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Planning comparison only: independent normal observations with known standard deviationσ. Mean standard errorσ/√n; nominal 95% normal half-width 1.96σ/√n. Target half-width 1 mg/L requires ceiling[(1.96σ)^2]independent units. These are prospective assumptions, not confidence intervals estimated from the four-pair packet.

Precision depends on independent information, not the number of repeated readings alone.

This known-σ normal planning formula is not a fitted confidence interval from four pairs. Clustered observations, unknown variance, attrition and nonnormal small samples require a different design or uncertainty calculation.

Predict, change one control, and retain contrasting captures. Reconstruct the analysis and decision rule before opening feedback. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Understand

Define the decision and evidence boundary

Monitoring design should connect a decision-relevant precision target to independent sampling units. Many readings from one sensor or one site can improve its measurement but do not automatically create new independent sites. Temporal autocorrelation and clustering can make the nominal record count overstate information.

Reconstruct the transparent method

The original planning model assumes independent normal observations and a known population standard deviation σ. The standard error of a mean isσ/√n; a nominal 95% normal half-width is 1.96σ/√n. This is a prospective design calculation, not an estimated confidence interval from the four-pair packet.

Interpret the comparison

To target half-width at most 1 mg/L, solve n≥(1.96σ)² and round upward to an integer. Doubling n reduces the width by a factor√2, while quadrupling n halves it. Increasing variability increases required sample size quadratically. The control’s planning scenarios do not manufacture additional observed pairs.

Predeclare limitations and revision

Unknown variance, small nonnormal samples, unequal weights, attrition and correlated observations require a different uncertainty calculation or design adjustment. A confidence interval also concerns an estimand under assumptions, not a guarantee that a particular intervention is safe or effective. Specify which independent units could realistically be obtained.

Changed-case transfer

With known σ3 mg/L, how many independent units meet half-width 1? What half-width does n 16 give?

Feedback

Required ceiling(5.88²)=35 units. At n 16, half-width 1.96×3/4=1.47 mg/L, so the largest displayed n does not meet the target. The model reports the shortfall rather than pretending sixteen suffice.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
