Environmental Science: ecological systems and evidence

Fifty-five original college-level destinations implement the defined six-module environmental-systems pathway and cumulative evidence defense. Authored teaching, public practice and retained projects are available; actual supervised field competence and independently assessed learner mastery remain separate gates.

This is the course outline. Open a unit to choose a lesson; every lesson opens on its own page. Explanations and experiments live inside those lesson pages.

Preparation and course boundaries

Preparation: Introductory ecology, algebra, units, ratios and graph interpretation. Exponentials and uncertainty notation are explained through supplied equations; no prior calculus, programming or unsupervised fieldwork is required.

Course outcome: Reconcile ecological and Earth-system budgets, design representative detection-aware surveys, compare lifecycle services, audit pollution/climate evidence, and defend an uncertainty-sensitive district decision using reproducible data, explicit constraints, human critique and unfamiliar transfer.

All lessons are directly accessible. Reused foundation explanations are identified where relevant; completing a different course does not award this course's evidence. The 55 registered lessons keep separate predictions, captures, practice responses and reflections.

Systems, ecological processes and scale8 lessons

Connect boundary, scale, mechanism and measurement to an auditable environmental inference rather than a numerical result alone.

Population and biodiversity measurement8 lessons

Define a target population, separate selection from detection, compare corrected abundance/occupancy and biodiversity estimands, and standardize repeated surveys without fabricating missing information.

Earth systems and resource budgets9 lessons

Reconcile water, carbon and nutrient inventories across nested boundaries, mass bases, phase partition and lagged dynamics; test source and sustainable-resource claims against identifiable evidence.

Energy, agriculture and water services10 lessons

Compare useful services with consistent lifecycle boundaries; reconcile energy, water, nutrient and food-loss ledgers and defend choices under explicit demand and stress scenarios.

Pollution and climate evidence10 lessons

Audit environmental time series and exposure summaries, close coupled heat/carbon budgets and distinguish physical response, pattern identification and independent model evaluation.

Use contrasting patterns without overstating an exact fit

Vary upper-layer anomaly while holding the lower value fixed. Reconstruct amplitudes and identify which quantity a simple mean hides. Then replace the second pattern conceptually with twice the first and explain the loss of uniqueness.

Challenge equal training fits with new evidence

Compare c 0,0.5 and 1 against the same new observation. Retain training and new-point errors separately; explain what additional data would distinguish a robust mechanism from a flexible interpolation.

Intervention design, uncertainty and monitoring8 lessons

Analyze a versioned original dataset reproducibly, compare intervention services under explicit constraints and values, and predeclare monitoring/revision rules with honest uncertainty and authority boundaries.

Cumulative district decision and evidence defense2 lessons

Integrate all six module outcomes in a reproducible, source-backed argument with retained original plans, explicit constraints, human critique and an unfamiliar transfer; separate authored/guided work from practical or independent mastery.

Investigation portfolio

Keep predictions before comparison, complete raw records and units, explain competing models and test a changed case. Supplied and simulated data are labeled in each lesson. A saved notebook is not proof of experimental technique or correct reasoning.

Full-course district stress and evidence defense

Evidence to retain: Retain each candidate outcome and failed constraint, reconstruct load/energy/climate reversals, attach the versioned paired-site reanalysis and explain one source-backed uncertainty or alternative mechanism from every module.

Boundary: Original fictional district and datasets, not a real policy recommendation, field intervention or independently certified assessment.

Traceable paired-site reanalysis

Evidence to retain: Download original/corrected cenv-basin-pairs@1,retain record-level provenance and independently reproduce contrasts, all label swaps and counterfactual sensitivity.

Boundary: Original synthetic dataset, not actual intervention or measured field records; assignment/no-interference assumptions stipulated.

Precision and consequence-aware intervention comparison

Evidence to retain: Distinguish prospective independent sample requirements from observed data; compare service feasibility, cost ratios and value-weight ranking reversals.

Boundary: Known-variance normal planning and fictional utility/cost scales; no operational sampling permission or treatment recommendation.

Observation continuity and comparable summaries

Evidence to retain: Retain complete raw/corrected sequences, fixed baselines and weights, censored intervals and independent justification for each adjustment.

Boundary: Known offsets and seasonal anomalies are supplied, not inferred field corrections; arithmetic bounds are not population confidence limits.

Exposure and coupled physical budgets

Evidence to retain: Compare peak/time integrals and source terms; reconcile heat/carbon currencies, internal exchange, imbalance and thermal response.

Boundary: No personal dose, safety threshold, actual indoor exposure, present global flux or operational climate forecast.

Comparable energy service and lifecycle inventory

Evidence to retain: Retain common functional units, whole and allocated inventories, a timed storage closure and demand-growth counterexample.

Boundary: Synthetic average factors and supplied behavior do not establish marginal emissions, causal rebound or actual operating performance.

Water, food and nutrient service audit

Evidence to retain: Reconcile withdrawal/return/consumption, crop output versus water productivity, nutrient denominators and hydraulic/electric energy.

Boundary: No crop-specific prescription, fertilizer rate, pumping design or extraction authorization.

Mass bases and phase-aware transport

Evidence to retain: Reconstruct fine-earth mass, equivalent-mass depth, phase concentrations and reacted versus conservative tracer fractions; identify a falsifying observation.

Boundary: Uniform profiles, constant partition and fixed endmembers are explicit assumptions, not field-calibrated properties.

Detection and recapture comparison

Evidence to retain: Compare repeat-visit nondetection probabilities, overlap-dependent estimates and externally supplied detection scenarios. Explain closure, identification and uncertainty before interpreting trends.

Boundary: No fitted field occupancy, trapping, marking, release or personal species-location data.

Counterfactual and uncertainty design

Evidence to retain: Submit an original design before public feedback; distinguish independent units from repeats, reconstruct contrasts and covariance scenarios, and predict a targeted intervention.

Boundary: No randomization, covariance estimate or causal certainty is inferred from the supplied arrays.

Dynamic and assay model challenge

Evidence to retain: Compare time scales, local displacement behavior and oxygen rates; identify observations that could falsify each idealization and preserve prediction/feedback exposure.

Boundary: No tracer release, organism collection, bottle incubation or actual ecosystem stability claim.

Mixed assessment and cumulative project

Open the retained response and project workspaces. Practice, saved work and independently reviewed proficiency remain separate.

Mixed assessment and retained reasoning

These 40 course-specific public tasks are practice, not a secure examination. Each retains up to three immutable written responses, known feedback exposure before each response, and human rubric critiques. Drafts remain editable. No text-length check or self-reported review certifies correctness, independence, laboratory skill or mastery.

1. Retain an actual-data provenance and inference audit before feedback

Use cenv-noaa-mlo-2020-2021@1 and the official NOAA source/terms linked in the final lesson. Before opening public feedback, retain the documented atmospheric question, source identity/date/hash, reuse basis, all eight column meanings, flags and your exclusion/weighting rules. Recompute both equal-month means, the twelve same-month differences and the May-to-September 2021 change. Explain why this is neither a global annual estimator nor a causal test of an emissions intervention. Name one source or sampling change that would require revising the analysis; disclose previous feedback and assistance.

Course-specific review criteria

  • Traceable actual source, packet identity and public-domain/attribution/no-endorsement conditions, with any exceptions inspected
  • Complete 24-row schema/units/quality audit and explicit equal-month rather than day or uncertainty weighting
  • Means 414.213333 and 416.414167 ppm, mean difference 2.200833 ppm and within-2021 seasonal change−5.83 ppm
  • Seasonality, site representativeness, serial dependence and causal attribution limits; a concrete changed-source sensitivity
  • First reasoning and prior exposure/assistance retained; no fabricated independent or practical completion

Include calculations with units, source or dataset provenance, assumptions, competing explanations and limitations as relevant. The draft is saved but is not a locked response until submitted.

2. Audit ecological evidence before a district claim

A district samples only accessible high-quality habitat and reports higher raw counts after changing the panel. Explain the target/frame, weighting and repeated-detection evidence needed before inferring recovery. Separately two intervals carry 100/900 m³ with concentrations 5/1 mg/L: compute transported mass and contrast it with the unweighted mean. Connect the inference to a nested ecosystem boundary and independent replication.

4. Preserve observation corrections and causal uncertainty

Reconstruct cenv-basin-pairs@1 corrected contrasts and their mean, then enumerate the corrected two-sided exact paired randomization probability. Retain a criterion-by-criterion human review

Reviewer identity and role are declarations, not authenticated credentials. Unsaved review fields below are lost on navigation. Review every criterion with an exact quotation, calculation or evidence citation and a next step.

Full-course project: defend and revise a district environmental decision

Integrate all six SC12 modules, six original-plan responses and the original cenv-basin-pairs@1 dataset in a bounded district decision. Preserve earlier category reports in their original archived versions. A correct public calculation is not independent mastery, real fieldwork or authority to implement a policy.

  1. Retain the six original plans

Complete or identify cenv-m1-original-plan through cenv-m6-original-plan with their actual first-response and feedback-exposure history. Declare assistance and prior familiarity; do not recreate an unexposed history after reading keys.

Evidence to retain: Six retained first plans with precise task versions, predictions, independent-unit definitions and exposure declarations.

  2. Select a documented problem and build the outcome/source crosswalk

Use the final lesson’s NOAA Mauna Loa 2020–2021 actual-data bridge (official source/download, public-domain terms, full 24-row subset and provenance file), then select a real documented environmental problem and an openly licensed or permissioned dataset for independent analysis. Retain the source URL, dataset/version/date, license or permission basis, provenance, units, sampling frame, missingness, measurement limitations and reproducible analysis recipe; do not redistribute data without permission. The fictional packet is method rehearsal, not satisfaction of this real-data outcome. For each module identify a source-backed mechanism, a quantitative action, a changed-case result and an uncertainty or practical boundary. Explain how its system, time and service boundary connects to the district claim.

Evidence to retain: Documented problem, licensed-dataset provenance audit and retained real-data analysis, plus six-row crosswalk with exact references and incompatible assumptions. Missing real-data evidence remains an unmet learner gate.

  3. Reproduce the original dataset analysis

Export cenv-basin-pairs@1, preserve all eight raw records and the one known calibration offset, derive four corrected contrasts and all sixteen label-swap statistics. Add a counterfactual and independent-unit sensitivity.

Evidence to retain: Traceable recipe, complete raw/corrected columns, units, exact reference distribution and honest synthetic provenance.

  4. Compare service portfolios and stress constraints

Reconstruct every district candidate at multiple stress settings and the changed flow/load/electricity packet. Check hard requirements before value-weight scoring; keep uncertainty and stakeholder values separate.

Evidence to retain: All outcomes and failed constraints, load/energy/carbon calculations, explicit service periods and a ranking-reversal or infeasibility case.

  5. Freeze the first defended report

Explain which claims are supported conditionally, which are unidentifiable and what new observation could change the choice. Include monitoring/confirmation, repeated-look accounting, equity/ecological limitations and who can authorize a revision.

Evidence to retain: Immutable first report, competing mechanisms, source/evidence audit and a safe proposed—not completed—fieldwork plan where practical evidence is required.

  6. Obtain criterion-linked human critique and revise

A reviewer cites specific evidence against the course rubric. Preserve one substantive revision that explains changed assumptions, calculations or conclusions; do not overwrite the original report or feedback exposure.

Evidence to retain: Original report, declared reviewer role, evidence-linked judgments and distinct justified revision.

  7. Respond to a genuinely unfamiliar assignment

A reviewer supplies a new packet, boundary or constraint not simply copied from public practice. Retain its prompt, provenance, first prediction and assistance/exposure declaration before the response; identify whether practical evidence remains missing.

Evidence to retain: Immutable assignment and response, reviewer judgment of unfamiliarity, and separate guided, independent and practical completion decisions.

Project review criteria

  • Ecological systems, scale and causal alternatives
  • Representative sampling, detection and biodiversity estimands
  • Water/carbon/nutrient stock-flow and mass-basis correctness
  • Comparable energy/food/water services and lifecycle boundaries
  • Pollution/climate observation, response and identification limits
  • Traceable independent analysis and uncertainty-sensitive monitoring
  • Transparent hard constraints, stakeholder values and action authority
  • Retained original plans/report, substantive critique and revision
  • Genuinely unfamiliar transfer with exposure and assistance disclosed
  • Licensed or permissioned real-dataset analysis distinct from synthetic rehearsal
  • Honest synthetic provenance and separate supervised practical/learner gates

Retain raw-data identifiers, provenance, units, prior predictions, methods, calculations, competing explanations and safety boundaries. State explicitly when data are simulated, supplied or genuinely observed. This saved text cannot verify a real experiment; do not invent measurements or completed supervised work. Maximum 12,000 characters; retain larger evidence files separately and cite them.

A nonempty report is only a saved submission. First and revised reports remain separate and cannot be overwritten. A critique of the first report is required before retaining one revision.

Fresh transfer direction

A reviewer changes a coupled boundary—for example seasonal detection and habitat weights, a groundwater return pathway, a sensor history plus counterfactual trend, or a hard food-service threshold. Rebuild the affected evidence chain and preserve all remaining failures rather than forcing the original recommendation.

A human must supply the actual new task, evidence and conditions before the learner responds. The transfer-direction text is not itself an unseen assessment. Use the retained assignment form after the first project; exposed public task identifier: expanded-public:college-environmental.

Science backups preserve each course's separate responses, exposure, rubric reviews and project history. Older backups do not reset attempts or erase known exposure. Divergent same-version immutable responses and incompatible same-version project histories are rejected rather than silently replaced; preserve both files for review.

Sources and boundaries
  • All 55 destinations in the defined introductory college scope are authored; this is not an exhaustive environmental specialization, accredited field course or automatic learner-completion claim.
  • Original computational cases are not observed datasets, a supervised field course or secure independent assessment.
  • No physical release, chemical handling, organism manipulation or hazardous-site access is requested.
  • Prerequisite links may be reused for explanation, but prior AP completion does not grant credit for this distinct course evidence.

Original LearnAI explanations and tasks use the references for scientific scope. Any attributed dataset or image has its own declared provenance. Laboratory or field activity requires an appropriate educator-approved protocol; no hazardous real-world operation is required by the guided path.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
