Reconcile ecosystem budgets across nested boundaries

An ecosystem includes interacting organisms and their physical environment, but the analytical boundary is chosen for a question. A soil patch, wetland and watershed can each be legitimate systems. Changing the boundary changes which movements count as external fluxes without changing the underlying physical transfer. State the element or material tracked, spatial extent and time interval before adding quantities.

Learning outcome: Save transfer 5 and 20 at B loss 4. Draw both nested boundaries, independently reconstruct all crossing terms and identify one biological outcome that could differ even with identical combined mass.

Starting recap

Define the system, measured quantity, comparison and scale before interpreting a result. Use algebraic balances and supplied models; no prior calculus or fieldwork is assumed.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At transfer 10 kg/day and B loss 4 kg/day, A changes+5 kg and B+6 kg during the day. Their final stocks 105 and 56 sum 161 kg, an 11 kg increase from 150. Changing internal transfer to 20 makes A 95 and B 66, leaving the same total 161.

Predict

Can an intervention change both local stocks without changing the combined stock?

Experiment

Save transfer 5 and 20 at B loss 4. Draw both nested boundaries, independently reconstruct all crossing terms and identify one biological outcome that could differ even with identical combined mass.

Reconcile nested ecosystem boundaries

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original two-compartment one-day inventory: A starts 100 kg, B 50 kg; external input 20 kg/day to A, external loss 5 kg/day from A. Internal A→B transfer cancels only at the combined boundary. Rates held constant one day; no feedback or uncertainty in this ledger.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Internal transfers cancel only when both compartments are inside the chosen boundary.

Changing transfer redistributes stock but cannot create total matter. An omitted export or changing rate can break this one-day prediction; the diagram must specify every external crossing.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Frame the environmental question

An ecosystem includes interacting organisms and their physical environment, but the analytical boundary is chosen for a question. A soil patch, wetland and watershed can each be legitimate systems. Changing the boundary changes which movements count as external fluxes without changing the underlying physical transfer. State the element or material tracked, spatial extent and time interval before adding quantities.

Build the measurement or system model

A compartment diagram separates stocks from transfers. Stocks have mass units; rates have mass per time. A flux contributes a stock change only after integration over time. Here rates are held constant for one day, making numerical rate and daily-change values equal but not dimensionally identical. A longer comparison cannot simply reuse the same change if rates respond to evolving stocks.

Work at the right scale

The original system contains compartments A and B. A receives an external input and loses material externally; an A-to-B movement is an output from A and input to B. When both compartments are enclosed in one boundary, that internal movement cancels. It can change local availability and ecological response even though it cannot change combined mass.

Challenge the inference

Conservation is not an ecological prediction by itself. An inventory can close while biological functions change through redistribution, chemical form or timing. Conversely, an apparent imbalance may indicate an omitted pathway, unit error or measurement uncertainty rather than creation or destruction of the element. Biomass, dissolved nutrient and total element inventories are not interchangeable.

Design a defensible comparison

Use the diagram as an auditable argument. Draw the same transfer once, label its direction and attach the source of its estimate. Reconcile local and combined balances before explaining why an intervention matters. The virtual model holds rates fixed and does not establish that actual habitats follow those rates.

Changed-case transfer

For transfer 15 and B loss 8, determine both final stocks and combined change. Then explain the effect of an omitted external export 3 from B.

Feedback

A 100 and B 57 kg; total 157, change+7. An additional external export 3 gives B 54, total 154, change+4. It does not cancel like the internal transfer.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
