Distinguish hydraulic residence from a pulse-removal time

A mean residence time describes a distribution of passage times, not a promise that every parcel exits at that time. A completely mixed reservoir contains material of different ages. Continuous outflow carries a fraction of the current tracer inventory, so an instantaneous pulse declines gradually rather than leaving as one intact packet.

Learning outcome: Compare flows 100 and 200 at time 5, then find the time-scale ratio. Reconstruct remaining/exported mass and identify an observation that would challenge complete mixing.

Starting recap

Define the system, measured quantity, comparison and scale before interpreting a result. Use algebraic balances and supplied models; no prior calculus or fieldwork is assumed.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At Q 100 m³/day and V 1000 m³, mean residence is 10 days. After 5 days, 100 exp(−0.5)=60.65 kg remains and 39.35 kg has exited. Half-removal time is 6.93 days, not 10.

Will one hydraulic residence time remove all tracer from a well-mixed reservoir?

Experiment

Compare flows 100 and 200 at time 5, then find the time-scale ratio. Reconstruct remaining/exported mass and identify an observation that would challenge complete mixing.

Connect a pulse response with a well-mixed residence model

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original reservoir V 1000 m³, initial tracer 100 kg, tracer-free inflow balances outflow Q. Instant homogeneous mixing, conservative tracer, no further source. M(t)=100 exp(−Qt/1000); mean hydraulic residence V/Q differs from half-removal time. Virtual only; no release.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A well-mixed pulse leaves gradually; one residence time does not empty the reservoir.

The exponential comes from dM/dt=−(Q/V)M. Preferential flow, dead zones, sorption or decay violate the conservative homogeneous model; no environmental tracer release is requested.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Understand

Frame the environmental question

A mean residence time describes a distribution of passage times, not a promise that every parcel exits at that time. A completely mixed reservoir contains material of different ages. Continuous outflow carries a fraction of the current tracer inventory, so an instantaneous pulse declines gradually rather than leaving as one intact packet.

Build the measurement or system model

For fixed volume V and balanced inflow/outflow Q, the conservative tracer concentration is M/V. Export rate is Q times that concentration, yielding dM/dt=−(Q/V)M when inflow contains no tracer. The solution M=M 0 exp(−Qt/V) is supplied and can be checked by substitution; no calculus is required to compare its ratios.

Work at the right scale

The hydraulic mean V/Q is one time scale. At that time, exp(−1), about 0.368, of the original tracer remains. Half-removal time is (V/Q)ln 2, about 0.693 times the mean. Different threshold questions therefore require different calculations, even within this ideal model.

Challenge the inference

Actual ecosystems can contain preferential channels, slowly exchanging zones, sorption and chemical or biological transformation. A mismatch with the ideal curve could reveal one of these processes, measurement issues or a changing flow rate. Do not label every long tail degradation, or every disappearance downstream permanent removal from the environment.

Design a defensible comparison

This is a virtual pulse experiment. Plan observations at multiple times, document flow and retain mass recovery, but do not release tracers or collect water without appropriate authorization and supervision. Model identifiability depends on the available measurements, not merely a close-looking curve.

Changed-case transfer

For Q 200, calculate mean residence, half-removal time and remaining mass after 5 days.

Feedback

Mean 5 days; half-removal 3.466 days; remaining 100/e≈36.79 kg. The model exports about 63.21 kg and conserves the initial total.

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

For Q 200, calculate mean residence, half-removal time and remaining mass after 5 days.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
