SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Close an internal heat transfer without inventing extra forcing

The climate system stores heat in reservoirs with different capacities and exchange rates. A surface temperature record alone does not describe all stored energy. Transfer between a surface and deep reservoir can alter their separate temperature rates while conserving their combined heat budget.

Learning outcome: Compare equal reservoir anomalies with a surface-warmer and deep-warmer state. Reconcile total heat rate each time and explain why a temporarily small surface rate does not establish zero planetary heat uptake.

Starting recap

Retain observation history, units, temporal coverage and model assumptions; distinguish a conditional reconstruction from detected or attributed environmental change.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Close a surface–deep heat-exchange ledger

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original instantaneous two-box budget: forcing 4 W/m², surface radiative response 1.2×Ts, exchange 0.8(Ts−Td)W/m², surface/deep capacities 8/80 W·year/(m² K). Internal exchange cancels in total heat rate. No time integration or observed ocean profile is claimed.

Internal heat redistribution changes layer rates but cancels from the whole-system budget.

A negative exchange means the deep box supplies heat to the surface under this stipulated state. These instantaneous rates are not next-year temperatures; capacities convert heat rates to temperature rates and different layers respond on different timescales.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Understand

Define the evidence question

The climate system stores heat in reservoirs with different capacities and exchange rates. A surface temperature record alone does not describe all stored energy. Transfer between a surface and deep reservoir can alter their separate temperature rates while conserving their combined heat budget.

Reconstruct the observation or physical model

The original instantaneous ledger uses forcing 4 W/m², surface restoring response 1.2 Ts and internal transfer 0.8(Ts−Td). Surface heat rate is 4−1.2 Ts−transfer; deep rate is transfer. Adding them cancels the internal term, leaving 4−1.2 Ts. Temperature rates divide these heat rates by capacities 8 and 80 W·year/(m² K).

Separate the competing interpretations

When the surface is warmer, transfer is positive toward the deep box. If the deep box is warmer in the stipulated state, the signed transfer reverses. A negative transfer is not a negative heat content. Different capacities mean equal heat rates do not imply equal temperature changes.

Challenge uncertainty and identification

These are instantaneous rates at supplied anomalies, not integrated next-year values. Spatial circulation, nonlinear exchange, changing forcing and the real ocean’s many time scales are omitted. A model that counts internal exchange again as external forcing would violate its own system boundary.

Changed-case transfer

Feedback

Transfer−0.8 W/m²; surface 4−0.6−(−0.8)=4.2, deep−0.8, total 3.4 W/m². Rates 0.525 and−0.01 K/year. The deep reservoir supplies heat in this hypothetical state.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
