Track return flows before claiming real water savings

Water withdrawn from a river or aquifer is not necessarily consumed. Some returns to usable downstream water or groundwater; some is evaporated, transpired, exported or degraded beyond the defined recovery boundary. Field application efficiency and basin depletion therefore answer different questions.

Learning outcome: Compare 70/50 and 70/60 withdrawal/consumption cases. Explain why the same withdrawal improvement can accompany zero or negative consumption saving, then relax one recovery assumption.

Starting recap

Fix the useful service, lifecycle boundary and scenario; distinguish a conditional model result from an observed causal improvement.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

New withdrawal 70 and consumption 50 give return 20. Apparent withdrawal saving is 30 but basin consumption saving is zero. Reference return 50 fell by the same 30, so downstream recoverable water must be included.

Separate lower withdrawal from lower depletion

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Reference withdrawal 100, consumption 50, recoverable return 50. New return=withdrawal−consumption. Closed basin accounting: all returns remain timely, usable and accessible downstream; no storage change or transfer outside basin. Withdrawal savings are not automatically additional basin water.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Recoverable return flows connect field efficiency with downstream water availability.

Timing, quality, salt sinks or inaccessible groundwater can break the full-recovery assumption. A lower withdrawal can coexist with unchanged or increased basin consumption; service and environmental flow constraints must be assessed separately.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Understand

Define the useful service

Water withdrawn from a river or aquifer is not necessarily consumed. Some returns to usable downstream water or groundwater; some is evaporated, transpired, exported or degraded beyond the defined recovery boundary. Field application efficiency and basin depletion therefore answer different questions.

Construct the comparable ledger

The original reference withdraws 100 water units, consumes 50 and returns 50. The new packet has withdrawal W and consumption C; return is W−C. Withdrawal saving is 100−W, whereas consumption saving is 50−C. These are equal only under particular return-flow changes.

Interpret the competing metrics

The stated basin assumes all returns remain timely, usable and accessible to downstream users, with no storage change. Under that strong assumption a reduction in return flow can offset apparent upstream withdrawal savings. Expanding cropped area or increasing transpiration after an efficiency improvement can even raise total depletion.

Challenge the boundary and scenario

Real accounting must examine water quality, return timing, environmental flow needs, inaccessible aquifers, salt sinks and basin transfers. None is inferred from a single efficiency percentage. The virtual ledger is not an irrigation schedule, extraction permission or recommendation to disregard field efficiency: pumping energy and other services may still improve.

Changed-case transfer

New withdrawal 60 and consumption 45: calculate return, withdrawal saving and basin consumption saving.

Feedback

Return 15, withdrawal saving 40 and consumption saving 5 water units. The difference 35 reflects reduced recoverable return, not missing water.

Sources and evidence boundary

No physical equipment work, chemical application, organism manipulation or water extraction is requested. Retain first reasoning and critique in the course workspace; public feedback is practice, not independent assessment.

Apply

Under full return-flow recovery, lower withdrawal alone proves:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
