Test a source estimate against a reacted-tracer counterexample

Endmember mixing uses distinct source compositions to infer contributions to a mixture. A two-source concentration relation is linear when volumes mix consistently, source concentrations are known and stable, and the tracer is conservative along the relevant flow paths. Those are causal assumptions, not consequences of solving the equation.

Learning outcome: Compare removal 0 and 10 at true fraction 0.25. Retain both tracers, calculate the erroneous inversion and propose an independent observation that could distinguish reaction from a changed endmember.

Starting recap

Specify the spatial, temporal and material boundary; keep observation, residual, model parameter and inferred mechanism distinct.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At true f 0.5, tracer A starts 30 mg/L. Removing 4 leaves 26, which falsely implies f 0.4 under the conservative inversion. Tracer B remains 30 mg/L and recovers f 0.5. The disagreement tests the assumed observation model rather than proving the actual high source vanished.

Predict

Can two source-fraction estimates disagree because one tracer reacted rather than because the water fractions changed?

Experiment

Test a conservative two-endmember source estimate

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Two endmembers: tracer A 10/50 mg/L, tracer B 20/40 mg/L. Ideal volume mixing, constant endmembers; A then loses selected concentration, B remains conservative. Invert A as if conservative to reveal bias. No actual source assignment or pollutant risk is inferred.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A source fraction is identifiable only under a valid mixing and reaction model.

A negative inferred fraction is diagnostic of inconsistent endmembers, reaction or error, not a physical negative source. Do not clamp it silently or assume a second tracer automatically resolves all unknown sources.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Connect the Earth-system mechanism

Endmember mixing uses distinct source compositions to infer contributions to a mixture. A two-source concentration relation is linear when volumes mix consistently, source concentrations are known and stable, and the tracer is conservative along the relevant flow paths. Those are causal assumptions, not consequences of solving the equation.

Build the declared budget

The original low and high sources have tracer A concentrations 10 and 50 mg/L. If the high-source water fraction is f, the unreacted mixture is 10+40 f. The inversion f=(C−10)/40 recovers the source fraction only if no process changes A. A second tracer B has endmembers 20 and 40 mg/L and is stipulated conservative.

Separate the competing quantities

The model deliberately removes an assigned concentration of A after mixing. Inverting the reacted concentration as if conservative underestimates the high-source fraction and can produce a negative value. A value outside 0–1 is evidence of inconsistent assumptions or data, not a physical negative source and not a reason to silently clamp the estimate.

Challenge the inference

Actual source interpretation must examine endmember variability, additional sources, reaction, measurement uncertainty and flow history. Several tracers can help discriminate hypotheses, but adding a second measurement does not automatically identify every source and reaction. Natural chemical contrasts can sometimes be used without adding tracers; no environmental release is requested by this exercise.

Worked original packet

Changed-case transfer

For true fraction 0 and A removal 6 mg/L, compute observed A and its naive inferred fraction. How should the negative estimate be reported?

Feedback

Observed A 4 mg/L; naive fraction(4−10)/40=−0.15. Report the incompatibility with the two-endmember conservative model and investigate reaction/endmembers/error rather than present−15% as a physical contribution.

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
