Audit nutrient efficiency denominators and missing pathways
Nitrogen-use metrics are meaningful only when their numerator and denominator are stated. Harvested nitrogen divided by fertilizer input is a partial balance ratio; it does not count all biological fixation, deposition, imported material or soil-stock contributions. A ratio above one can therefore reveal omitted inputs or stock drawdown rather than miraculous nutrient creation.
Learning outcome: Compare fertilizer 50 with harvest 100 and 150. Identify when the supplied total inputs cannot explain harvest without stock drawdown or missing sources, then propose an independent observation.

Fix the useful service, lifecycle boundary and scenario; distinguish a conditional model result from an observed causal improvement.

With fertilizer 100, other inputs 30 and harvested N 100 kg/ha, partial ratio is 1, total-input ratio≈0.769 and residual 30 kg/ha. That residual has not been assigned among stock change and environmental losses.

Distinguish partial nutrient ratios from full closure
Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original additional nitrogen inputs 30 kg N/ha from explicitly supplied nonfertilizer sources. Partial ratio=harvest/fertilizer; total-input ratio=harvest/(fertilizer+30). Residual input−harvest combines stock change and unmeasured outputs; it is not all pollution. No application rate recommendation.
Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.
| Quantity | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Total supplied nitrogen input | 130 | kg N/ha |
| Harvested nitrogen | 100 | kg N/ha |
| Partial harvest / fertilizer ratio | 1 | ratio |
| Harvest / total-input ratio | 0.7692308 | ratio |
| Unclosed stock-change plus other-output residual | 30 | kg N/ha |
An efficiency ratio depends on its denominator and does not close every nitrogen pathway.
A negative residual requires stock drawdown, missing input or measurement inconsistency under the stated boundary. A positive residual can include stock accumulation as well as gaseous/water losses; do not identify all of it as pollution.
Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.
Fertilizer 75, other inputs 30 and harvest 125: calculate both ratios and the residual.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.
Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.
Save a science backup or import one
Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.
A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.
Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.
Complete file sets and course backups
A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.
The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.
0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
