Infer community metabolism from an oxygen assay with explicit assumptions

An environmental assay measures an observable response, not a process without assumptions. In a closed illuminated water sample, photosynthetic oxygen production and community respiration both affect dissolved oxygen. A dark sample suppresses photosynthesis but still contains respiring producers and heterotrophs. Their difference can support an inference only if other conditions are comparable.

Learning outcome: Compare light endpoints 7 and 9 at dark 6. Calculate all three rates, then describe how unequal light/dark respiration would bias the inferred gross term.

Starting recap

Define the system, measured quantity, comparison and scale before interpreting a result. Use algebraic balances and supplied models; no prior calculus or fieldwork is assumed.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With light final 9 and dark final 6 mg/L over 2 h, net light rate 0.5 and dark respiration 1 mg O₂/(L h). Apparent gross is 1.5. This is a community oxygen calculation, not a direct measurement of plant-only carbon NPP.

Open the experiment

Predict

Can apparent gross photosynthesis be positive while the community net oxygen rate is negative?

Infer community oxygen metabolism with an assay assumption

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original two-hour closed-bottle assay starts 8 mg O₂/L. Net light change=(L−8)/2; dark community respiration estimate=(8−D)/2; apparent gross=(L−D)/2 assumes light respiration equals dark respiration and no gas exchange. Community net production is not producer NPP; oxygen is not carbon mass.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Net light-bottle rate0.5mg O₂/(L h)
Dark respiration estimate1mg O₂/(L h)
Apparent gross production1.5mg O₂/(L h)

Gross production is inferred by adding an assumed respiration term to net change.

Both producers and consumers can respire in the community sample. Bottle effects, gas exchange, changed light respiration and variable duration can bias the estimate; no real oxygen or carbon data are claimed.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Frame the environmental question

An environmental assay measures an observable response, not a process without assumptions. In a closed illuminated water sample, photosynthetic oxygen production and community respiration both affect dissolved oxygen. A dark sample suppresses photosynthesis but still contains respiring producers and heterotrophs. Their difference can support an inference only if other conditions are comparable.

Build the measurement or system model

The original two-hour packet begins at 8 mg O₂/L. Net light change divided by duration estimates net community oxygen production under the enclosure assumptions. The dark decline estimates community oxygen consumption. Adding that respiration estimate to net light production yields an apparent gross production rate if respiration in light and darkness is equal.

Work at the right scale

Do not call the net community signal producer NPP automatically. Producer respiration and heterotroph respiration are not the same term, and the community bottle includes both. Nor does an oxygen rate directly give carbon mass without an appropriate stoichiometric conversion and further biological assumptions. Keep the measured currency visible.

Challenge the inference

Enclosure can alter mixing, light, temperature, gas exchange and organism interactions. Dark respiration may differ from respiration in the light. A positive apparent gross rate can coexist with negative net production if community respiration is larger. These are reasons to qualify an estimate, not to abandon measurement.

Design a defensible comparison

A proposed study should use independent biological samples, paired conditions, blanks/calibration where appropriate and a documented duration. Repeated readings of one bottle do not create independent ecosystems. Here the values are supplied; no collection, incubation or chemical oxygen assay is requested. Preserve raw readings and assumptions before reporting the derived rate.

Investigation

Compare light endpoints 7 and 9 at dark 6. Calculate all three rates, then describe how unequal light/dark respiration would bias the inferred gross term.

Changed-case transfer

If the same initial 8, light 9 and dark 6 readings occurred over 4 hours, what rates result? If actual light respiration were 0.8 rather than the dark estimate, what gross rate would follow over 2 hours?

Feedback

At 4 h, net 0.25, dark respiration 0.5, apparent gross 0.75 mg O₂/(L h). At 2 h with actual light respiration 0.8, gross is 0.5+0.8=1.3 rather than 1.5.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
