SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Ask whether new information can change a decision usefully

Monitoring can reduce uncertainty without changing a decision. Its decision value depends on the actions available, their consequences, the signal’s accuracy and its cost. Structured decision making separates scientific probabilities from stakeholder utility choices and identifies whether learning could improve an authorized future choice.

Learning outcome: Compare low, intermediate and high priors at fixed signal accuracy. Identify cases in which the signal never changes the preferred action, then vary cost and state the break-even value.

Starting recap

Preserve packet identity, independent units, analysis recipe, outcome constraints and review authority; distinguish scientific uncertainty from stakeholder value choices.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At prior 0.3, positive probability 0.38, positive posterior 0.24/0.38≈0.63158 and negative posterior 0.06/0.62≈0.09677. Without information, do nothing for utility 0. Acting only after a positive signal gives expected utility 8.8 before cost; cost 5 leaves net information value 3.8. Perfect-information value is 18.

Information is valuable when it can improve a decision enough to justify its cost.

The model permits doing nothing after either signal. Negative net value means the particular costly signal is not worthwhile under supplied utilities, not that environmental knowledge lacks value. False-positive/negative consequences, stakeholder values and learning across decisions need explicit treatment.

Predict, change one control, and retain contrasting captures. Reconstruct the analysis and decision rule before opening feedback. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Understand

Define the decision and evidence boundary

Monitoring can reduce uncertainty without changing a decision. Its decision value depends on the actions available, their consequences, the signal’s accuracy and its cost. Structured decision making separates scientific probabilities from stakeholder utility choices and identifies whether learning could improve an authorized future choice.

Reconstruct the transparent method

The fictional model has an adverse state with prior probability p. No action has utility zero; action costs 40 and benefits 100 only in that state, so expected action utility is 100 p−40. Without monitoring, choose the larger of that value and zero. This threshold is a supplied utility comparison, not a real environmental standard.

Interpret the comparison

The signal has sensitivity and specificity 0.8. Positive probability is 0.8 p+0.2(1−p); Bayes’ rule gives posterior adverse probability 0.8 p divided by that total. The negative posterior is 0.2 p divided by the negative-signal probability. After each signal, choose the better action and average its utility, then subtract monitoring cost and the best no-signal value.

Predeclare limitations and revision

Perfect information gives an upper comparison: act only in the adverse state, yielding 60 p before information cost. A noisy signal’s gross value cannot exceed that perfect-information value under these assumptions. A negative net value rejects this particular costly signal under these utilities, not the worth of environmental science or a legal duty to monitor.

Investigation

Compare low, intermediate and high priors at fixed signal accuracy. Identify cases in which the signal never changes the preferred action, then vary cost and state the break-even value.

Changed-case transfer

At prior 0.5 and monitoring cost 10, calculate best no-signal utility, gross signal-based utility and net information value.

Feedback

Positive/negative probabilities are each 0.5 with posteriors 0.8/0.2. No-signal best utility 10. Acting only after positive gives 0.5×40=20, so gross information gain 10 and net gain 0 after cost 10. Perfect-information gain 30−10=20.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
