SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Compare a lake equilibrium with its response timescale

A receiving-water concentration depends on external loading, water exchange and internal processing. A lower incoming concentration is not the same as a lower mass load when flow changes. A lake can also release previously stored nutrients, so a loading reduction need not produce immediate ecological recovery.

Learning outcome: Hold load 30 and compare flows 1000 and 5000. Compute steady concentration, exported fraction and both timescales. Identify an omitted internal source that could change the prediction.

Starting recap

Specify the spatial, temporal and material boundary; keep observation, residual, model parameter and inferred mechanism distinct.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

At L 30 kg/day and Q 3000 m³/day, Q+kV=5000 m³/day. C 0.006 kg/m³=6 mg/L; outflow 18 and net removal 12 kg/day close the 30 kg/day input. Hydraulic residence is 33.33 days and combined response timescale 20 days.

Does increasing flushing necessarily lower the fraction of incoming material exported downstream?

Relate loading, flushing and net removal at equilibrium

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original well-mixed constant-volume lake 100000 m³. Net first-order water-column removal k 0.02/day, no internal source. Steady concentration C=L/(Q+kV) kg/m³. Removal may store or transform material outside tracked water; coefficients are stipulated, not field-calibrated trophic predictions.

Loading, flushing and net removal jointly determine the stipulated equilibrium.

This ideal steady state does not guarantee ecological recovery or represent transient internal loading. Changing flow can alter concentration and exported fraction differently; a response timescale is not an instant equilibrium claim.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Understand

Connect the Earth-system mechanism

A receiving-water concentration depends on external loading, water exchange and internal processing. A lower incoming concentration is not the same as a lower mass load when flow changes. A lake can also release previously stored nutrients, so a loading reduction need not produce immediate ecological recovery.

Build the declared budget

The original well-mixed lake has volume 100000 m³ and a net first-order water-column removal coefficient 0.02/day. With external load L and outflow Q, the balance is VdC/dt=L−QC−kVC. At a stipulated steady state, C=L/(Q+kV). C initially has kg/m³ units; multiplying by 1000 gives mg/L. Outflow and removal loads then sum to L.

Separate the competing quantities

The hydraulic residence time is V/Q, while the response timescale under this model is V/(Q+kV). Net removal shortens the response of water-column concentration relative to flushing alone. A timescale describes an approach under constant coefficients, not an assertion that equilibrium is reached instantly or that all nutrient atoms vanish.

Challenge the inference

Internal loading, stratification, seasonal biology and changing flows violate the simple constant-coefficient assumptions. A trophic response also depends on light, food webs and nutrient limitation. Compare concentration, exported load and biological endpoints separately, and retain the evidence used to estimate coefficients. These calculations neither calibrate a real lake nor establish a regulatory nutrient target.

Changed-case transfer

At load 20 and flow 2000, calculate steady concentration and both loads. What happens to concentration if an additional internal source 10 kg/day is included?

Feedback

Without internal source, concentration 20/4000=0.005 kg/m³=5 mg/L; export 10 and removal 10 kg/day. With total source 30, concentration 7.5 mg/L under the same coefficients; external loading alone no longer closes the source term.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
