SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Defend a district decision across services, budgets and stress

Integrate ecological evidence, resource services and explicit constraints without turning a favorable aggregate score into permission to ignore a failed requirement.

Learning outcome: Produce a reproducible comparison across all six course modules, preserve uncertainty and values separately, and identify when the available options are infeasible.

Starting recap

Useful service, observation quality, physical budgets, causal alternatives, values and decision authority are distinct parts of a defensible environmental claim.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

Candidate B at stress 0.5 produces 90 food units, uses 45 water units, delivers load 70 and climate burden 90: all four stated constraints pass. At stress 1 food falls to 85, so the same candidate fails despite unchanged environmental burdens.

Open the experiment

Predict

Can the lowest environmental burdens guarantee that a candidate meets the food-service requirement?

Experiment

Compare all three candidates at stress 0, 0.5 and 1. Retain each outcome and failure, then connect one uncertainty or observation issue from every earlier module to the proposed decision.

Defend a portfolio against explicit service and environmental constraints

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original normalized district packet: A food 100−20s, consumption 50, load 80, climate 110; B food 95−10s, consumption 45, load 70, climate 90; C food 85−5s, consumption 40, load 60, climate 80. Constraints: food≥90, consumption≤45, load≤75, climate≤100. Each currency uses its own fixed service period and normalized units; no probability or universal social objective supplied.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

This candidate meets all supplied constraints in this scenario.

At severe stress no supplied candidate meets every constraint. Report infeasibility and seek authorized new alternatives or explicitly reconsidered objectives; do not silently lower the food requirement or substitute withdrawal for consumption.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Define the decision before scoring alternatives

A district decision is not one environmental number. It links ecological processes, observation quality, resource services, pollution or climate mechanisms, stakeholder constraints and authorized review. The capstone uses a deliberately fictional district so that every assumption can be inspected without pretending to provide real management advice.

The four hard requirements are food service at least 90 units, consumptive water use at most 45, nutrient load at most 75 and lifecycle climate burden at most 100. These are invented teaching constraints, not regulatory standards. Each currency refers to its own fixed reporting period and service definition. They cannot be added as physical quantities.

Reconstruct the complete scenario table

CandidateFood at stress sConsumptive waterNutrient loadLifecycle climate burden
A100 − 20s5080110
B95 − 10s457090
C85 − 5s406080

The stress index ranges from zero to one; it is not a probability or a real drought forecast. Candidate A has the largest normal-state food output but fails all three environmental requirements. Candidate C has the lowest environmental burdens but misses the food requirement even without stress. Candidate B meets all four requirements at stress zero and 0.5, but not at severe stress.

At stress 0.5, B supplies 90 food units with water 45, load 70 and climate 90. Equality satisfies the declared food and water inequalities. At stress 0.75, B food falls to 87.5; A food is 85 and C food is 81.25. No candidate then meets the full set. A low average score or favorable carbon outcome cannot erase that infeasibility.

Bring all six course modules into the argument

  1. Systems and scale: draw the district, upstream and downstream boundaries. State where an internal transfer cancels and which ecological endpoint is actually measured.
  2. Sampling and biodiversity: specify the target population, inclusion weights, detection assumptions and effort-comparable biodiversity evidence. A convenient panel is not automatically representative.
  3. Earth/resource budgets: reconcile water, carbon and nutrients with stocks, phases and delayed response. Keep residuals distinct from independent observations.
  4. Energy, agriculture and water services: hold useful food/water/energy service and lifecycle boundaries comparable. Distinguish withdrawal from consumption and production from consumed food.
  5. Pollution/climate evidence: retain observation history, censoring, seasonal coverage and physically constrained alternative explanations. A fitted pattern alone supplies no confidence level.
  6. Intervention and monitoring: reproduce the versioned paired-site packet, separate predictions from value weights, and predeclare uncertainty, confirmation and review authority.

The capstone does not require every model to be numerically concatenated into one false universal simulator. It requires a coherent argument explaining which model answers which subquestion, which assumptions conflict and what additional evidence would be needed to link them.

Changed-case defense

At stress 0.75, explain why none of the three options is fully feasible. Propose one new alternative or one explicitly requested objective reconsideration, identify the stakeholder authorized to decide it and predict a result that would invalidate your proposal. Do not quietly replace consumption with withdrawal or lower the food minimum.

Feedback: all candidates fail at least one original condition. A defensible next step reports the failure, examines additional service supply or redesigned options, and records any authorized objective change with its consequences. It does not assert that a particular real community should accept a tradeoff.

Sources and evidence boundary

Original district packet and reasoning tasks. USGS structured decision making supports the separation of objectives, alternatives, predictions, uncertainty and values; USGS adaptive-management guide supports monitored revision. Apply

If no candidate satisfies every declared hard constraint, the defensible response is to:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At stress 0.75, determine whether any candidate meets all constraints. Explain what an authorized reviewer could do next without silently changing the original objectives.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
