Separate independent ecological replication from repeated assays

A measurement replicate and an independently treated ecological unit answer different questions. Reassaying one sample can reveal instrument precision, while independently sampled or assigned sites provide information about ecological variability and treatment response. Counting all technical repeats as if they were independent treatment units exaggerates the amount of causal information.

Learning outcome: Compare one and five assays at unchanged packet conditions; then shift comparison changes by+1. Retain both contrasts, separate measurement precision from replication and propose a counterfactual check.

Starting recap

Define the system, measured quantity, comparison and scale before interpreting a result. Use algebraic balances and supplied models; no prior calculus or fieldwork is assumed.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At the base comparison changes, pair contrasts are−3, −4, +1 and their mean is−2 response units. Three assays at each of six sites produce 18 technical results but only three independent pairs. Adding+1 to every comparison change makes contrasts−4, −5, 0 and mean−3.

Will increasing exact technical assays from one to five change the ecological mean or independent pair count?

Keep technical repeats separate from independent units

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Three independent treatment/comparison site pairs. Treatment changes[-4, -6, -2], comparison changes[-1, -2, -3]+b. Exact technical repeats do not create new site pairs. Equal pair weights; no significance test or randomization claim.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Repeated assays improve measurement information, not the number of independently treated sites.

A counterfactual shared trend remains an assumption. Pair-specific changes can differ; report that heterogeneity rather than count identical technical values as independent ecological replication.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Frame the environmental question

A measurement replicate and an independently treated ecological unit answer different questions. Reassaying one sample can reveal instrument precision, while independently sampled or assigned sites provide information about ecological variability and treatment response. Counting all technical repeats as if they were independent treatment units exaggerates the amount of causal information.

Build the measurement or system model

This original packet contains three treatment/comparison site pairs. Each site has a before-to-after response change; subtracting its comparison change produces a pair-specific contrast. Equal weighting of independent pairs targets their average contrast. The pairing is a design choice, not a guarantee that untreated trajectories would have matched.

Work at the right scale

Compare the treatment changes−4, −6, −2 with comparison changes−1, −2, −3. Their contrasts differ in both magnitude and sign. A pooled mean can summarize them but should not erase the positive contrast in one pair. Site history, treatment implementation and environmental conditions can produce heterogeneous outcomes.

Challenge the inference

Adding exact technical repeats in this virtual exercise leaves the independent pair count and mean contrast unchanged. In a real assay, repeated measurements may reduce a component of measurement uncertainty, but they cannot eliminate shared calibration bias or create new independently assigned sites. Nest technical observations within the correct ecological units.

Design a defensible comparison

Before interpreting the contrast causally, specify selection and assignment, shared-trend evidence, concurrent changes, timing and spillover. A before/after design without random assignment can still be useful, but its assumptions must be assessed rather than implied by a subtraction. No significance threshold is computed from the three invented pairs.

Changed-case transfer

A fourth independent pair has contrast+6. What is the equal-pair mean across the original three and this new pair? Is it equivalent to repeating the first pair?

Feedback

The original sum−6 plus 6 is 0, so the four-pair mean is 0. A new independent pair changes the sampled ecological information; repeating the first pair would not create a fourth independent unit.

These are synthetic computational comparisons, not measured field data, verified mastery or authorization for physical intervention. Retain your prediction, assumptions and source of each observation.

Apply

With five exact assays at each of six sites, the independent paired-unit count remains:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

A fourth independent pair has contrast+6. What is the equal-pair mean across the original three and this new pair? Is it equivalent to repeating the first pair?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
