SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Distinguish allocation conventions from avoided emissions

A process can supply more than one useful output. Assigning its whole burden to each output would double count; dividing its burden requires an explicit convention or a justified expanded-system comparison. Electricity and low-temperature heat carry different service quality, so equal energy is not the only relevant measure.

Learning outcome: Vary price ratio at constant whole burden. Reconcile both output sums and explain why attributed electricity emissions change without a physical emission reduction.

Starting recap

Fix the useful service, lifecycle boundary and scenario; distinguish a conditional model result from an observed causal improvement.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

For total burden 1000 kg CO₂e and electricity/heat price ratio 3, energy allocation assigns 333.33 to electricity and 666.67 to heat. Revenue allocation assigns 600 and 400; electricity intensity is 6 kg CO₂e/kWh. Whole-system burden stays 1000.

Audit allocation without changing whole-system emissions

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original combined system supplies 100 kWh electricity and 200 kWh useful heat. Compare allocation proportional to delivered energy versus revenue. Prices are per kWh, heat price normalized to one; neither allocation represents physical causal avoided emissions. Heat and electricity have different service quality.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Changing allocation redistributes an unchanged inventory between coproducts.

Different service quality makes energy allocation a convention rather than a uniquely correct causal answer. System expansion would need a justified displaced alternative; do not subtract an avoided burden without specifying that counterfactual.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Define the useful service

A process can supply more than one useful output. Assigning its whole burden to each output would double count; dividing its burden requires an explicit convention or a justified expanded-system comparison. Electricity and low-temperature heat carry different service quality, so equal energy is not the only relevant measure.

Construct the comparable ledger

The original combined process supplies 100 kWh electricity and 200 kWh useful heat. Energy allocation gives electricity one third of the burden. Revenue allocation weights electricity by its per-kWh price relative to heat: with ratio r, the electricity share is 100 r/(100 r+200). Prices alter attribution without physically changing the process.

Interpret the competing metrics

Both allocated burdens must sum to the original inventory. An electricity intensity divides its allocated burden by 100 kWh, not by the combined 300 kWh. A heat intensity would use its own 200 kWh denominator. Report whole-system results alongside allocated values so a favorable convention cannot hide the total.

Challenge the boundary and scenario

System expansion instead asks which alternative heat or electricity production is displaced. That counterfactual needs evidence about actual substitution, timing and service quality. It is not interchangeable with allocation, and an avoided-emissions credit cannot be inferred from product revenue. This packet does not establish which convention a particular standard requires.

Changed-case transfer

At total burden 1200 and price ratio 4, calculate energy- and revenue-allocated electricity burdens and revenue-based intensity.

Feedback

Energy allocation 400; revenue allocation 1200×4/6=800 kg CO₂e. Revenue-based electricity intensity is 8 kg CO₂e/kWh; heat receives 400 and the sum remains 1200.

Changing only the allocation rule changes:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At total burden 1200 and price ratio 4, calculate energy- and revenue-allocated electricity burdens and revenue-based intensity.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
