Challenge an exact fit with a withheld trajectory point

Interpolation can hide a wrong functional model.

Learning outcome: Compare zero and nonzero jerk with the same offset, then change only the offset. Freeze the first three fitting points before revealing the fourth and retain separate deterministic observation-bound versus omitted-model limits.

Starting recap

Read derivatives as local rates and integrals as signed accumulation. Review power and chain rules, vector components, units and initial conditions where used.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At j=.6 and offset−.1, a_fit=3.6 m/s², v_fit=1.8 m/s and intercept .9 m. The withheld residual is .6 m. Correcting the common offset changes only the intercept.

An exact fit to three points cannot validate the assumed constant-acceleration model.

The second difference x2−2x1+x0 gives3+j, and solving the first increment gives initial velocity2−j/3. The withheld residual at3 s is j metres with these numerical time units. A common position offset shifts the intercept but cancels from derivatives/residuals. Independent bounded errors ±.01 m give acceleration bound .01+2(.01)+.01=.04 m/s²; that does not cover an omitted cubic term or prove a confidence level.

Understand

Challenge an exact fit with a withheld trajectory point

Interpolation can hide a wrong functional model.

The synthetic observed position is1+2t+1.5t²+j t³/6 plus a common readout offset. Fit a constant-acceleration quadratic to the three points at t=0,1,2 s. The second difference x2−2x1+x0 gives a_fit=3+j in the stated units. Solving the first interval then gives v_fit=2−j/3 and x_fit0=1+offset.

The quadratic fits all three training positions exactly even when jerk j is nonzero. At a genuinely withheld t=3 s, observed minus predicted position is j metres with these numerical time values. Thus j=.4 produces a .4 m residual despite a zero fitting residual. This is a model test only if the fourth point was not used to choose the quadratic parameters.

A common additive position offset changes the intercept but cancels from the second difference and withheld residual. It does not become identifiable merely because more derivatives are computed. Separately, if each fitting position has an independently bounded error .01 m, the acceleration estimate has worst-case bound .01+2(.01)+.01=.04 m/s². That bound is not a statistical confidence interval and does not include the omitted jerk.

A withheld residual rejects this exact constant-acceleration model under the stated observation assumptions; it does not uniquely identify the force causing the deviation. Other timing or calibration faults can generate residuals. Preserve the alternatives and propose a genuinely independent discriminating observation rather than fitting every point and declaring success.

Changed-case check

Predict before reading the comparison. At j=.6 and offset−.1, a_fit=3.6 m/s², v_fit=1.8 m/s and intercept .9 m. The withheld residual is .6 m. Correcting the common offset changes only the intercept.

Retained investigation

Compare zero and nonzero jerk with the same offset, then change only the offset. Freeze the first three fitting points before revealing the fourth and retain separate deterministic observation-bound versus omitted-model limits. Why is a withheld point no longer independent if you use it to retune the model?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
