Check the motion before assigning zero work to a normal force

A normal force is perpendicular to a contact surface, but it need not be perpendicular to the contact point's velocity. A stationary ideal guide often has zero normal work because motion is tangent to it. A moving support can transfer energy in its normal direction.

Learning outcome: Compare a stationary and an accelerating support, draw normal and weight, and reconcile point-only work with the gravitational-potential boundary.

Starting recap

Use vector dot products for work, gradients for conservative force, definite integrals for accumulation and explicit energy/frame boundaries. Check accessible states before assigning trajectories.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

A normal force is not automatically a zero-work force when its contact point moves.

N−mg=ma fixes N=m(g+a). The point and moving support share upward displacement, so normal work N y is positive when a>0 and t>0. It equals ΔK+ΔUg. For a stationary ideal guide a normal can be perpendicular to velocity and do zero work, but that geometric premise does not apply to this moving support.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Check the motion before assigning zero work to a normal force

A normal force is perpendicular to a contact surface, but it need not be perpendicular to the contact point’s velocity. A stationary ideal guide often has zero normal work because motion is tangent to it. A moving support can transfer energy in its normal direction.

Here a = 2 kg point starts at rest on an upward-moving support with constant acceleration a and displacement y=a t²/2. Contact holds and N−mg=ma, giving N=2(10+a) N. The point shares the support’s upward displacement, so support work is Ny rather than zero.

With a = 1 m/s² and t = 2 s, y = 2 m, final speed2 m/s and N = 22 N. The support supplies44 J. Gravitational potential gains40 J and kinetic energy gains4 J, which sum to the same44 J. Weight’s negative work belongs in a point-only work equation; the potential term replaces it in the point-plus-Earth description.

If a = 0 with the specified rest initial condition, the support does not move, so normal work is zero despite N = 20 N. Neither normal-force magnitude alone nor the label ‘constraint’ determines work. This is a virtual energy balance, not a lift construction or an equipment rating.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
