Do not mistake a balanced vector ledger for a passive collision

A planar momentum equation determines a missing vector when all masses and the other vector are supplied. It does not by itself prove that the event satisfies an additional energy restriction. Here a 2 kg particle enters with velocity (3, 0) m/s and a 1 kg particle starts at rest, so total momentum is (6, 0) kg m/s and initial kinetic energy is 9 J.

Learning outcome: Derive the admissible velocity disk by completing the square. Test one interior, boundary and exterior point with separate vector and energy ledgers.

Starting recap

Integrate signed force and normalized mass moments. Specify the system before conserving momentum, and independently test energy and observation constraints.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

Change the first outgoing velocity to (2, 1) m/s. The second is (2, −2) m/s and final kinetic energy is 9 J, on the passive elastic boundary. The point (2, 0) gives the minimum 6 J.

Experiment

Test a momentum-compatible collision against its energy premise

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · First mass2 kg enters at(3,0), second mass1 kg is at rest. Given first outgoing velocity, infer second from zero external impulse. Then test the separate passive loss-only collision assumption; momentum-compatible states can require an internal stored-energy release not included in that passive premise.

This packet conserves momentum and does not require added translational kinetic energy under the passive screen.

Zero external impulse implies v2=(6−2v1x,−2v1y). Check kinetic energy separately: Kf=3(v1x−2)²+3v1y²+6 J. Thus a passive collision requires(v1x−2)²+v1y²≤1. Being inside that disk is a necessary energy condition, not proof that a particular contact material produces the chosen outgoing directions.

Understand

Do not mistake a balanced vector ledger for a passive collision

A planar momentum equation determines a missing vector when all masses and the other vector are supplied. It does not by itself prove that the event satisfies an additional energy restriction. Here a 2 kg particle enters with velocity (3, 0) m/s and a 1 kg particle starts at rest, so total momentum is (6, 0) kg m/s and initial kinetic energy is 9 J.

If the first outgoing velocity is (vx, vy), momentum requires the second to be (6 − 2vx, −2vy). Substitution into kinetic energy gives Kfinal = 3(vx − 2)² + 3vy² + 6 J. The 6 J term is the unchanged center translation.

For a stipulated passive collision with no stored-energy release, final kinetic energy cannot exceed 9 J. Thus allowed first-particle velocities satisfy (vx − 2)² + vy² ≤ 1. The boundary corresponds to elastic translational energy; points inside require a kinetic-energy reduction.

The proposed first velocity (3, 1) m/s gives the second (0, −2) m/s. Momentum balances, but final kinetic energy is 12 J, requiring a 3 J release from another energy store. It is inadmissible under the passive assumption, not a universal violation of conservation if an unmodeled energy store were present.

Changed-case check

Predict before reading the comparison. Change the first outgoing velocity to (2, 1) m/s. The second is (2, −2) m/s and final kinetic energy is 9 J, on the passive elastic boundary. The point (2, 0) gives the minimum 6 J.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
