Derive allowed modes without mistaking harmonic ratios for calibration

A string fixed at both ends must have zero displacement at x = 0 and x = L. A separated spatial solution proportional to sin(kx) meets the first condition; the second requires kL = nπ for positive integer n. Combining with the wave equation gives fn = nv/(2L).

Learning outcome: Derive fixed-end modes, compare a fixed-free boundary and propagate an elapsed-time gain through frequency and density inference.

Starting recap

Derive equations with their initial or boundary conditions, integrate distributed profiles, and check model domains independently of numerical outputs.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With a correct clock and n = 4, frequency is 20 Hz and adjacent-node spacing is 0.5 m. A gain of 0.9 would make the inferred density 0.081 kg/m while leaving all harmonic ratios unchanged.

Correct harmonic ratios can coexist with an incorrect absolute frequency calibration.

Fixed ends require sin(kL)=0, so k=npi/L and fn=nv/(2L). An elapsed-time readout multiplied by gain g reports frequency divided by g, causing inferred mu=T/(2L f1read)² to scale by gain². A separately fixed-free boundary instead has odd quarter-wave modes(2n−1)v/(4L); it is not the boundary drawn in this graph.

Understand

Derive allowed modes without mistaking harmonic ratios for calibration

A string fixed at both ends must have zero displacement at x = 0 and x = L. A separated spatial solution proportional to sin(kx) meets the first condition; the second requires kL = nπ for positive integer n. Combining with the wave equation gives fn = nv/(2L).

For L = 2 m, tension 40 N and density 0.1 kg/m, wave speed is 20 m/s and fundamental frequency is 5 Hz. The third mode has frequency 15 Hz, wavelength 4/3 m and adjacent-node spacing L/n = 2/3 m. The standing pattern is built from opposite-direction components, not two same-direction waves.

If a clock reports elapsed times multiplied by gain g, measured frequency is divided by g. At g = 1.1, a true 15 Hz mode is reported as about 13.6364 Hz. A period-based density inference μ = Tension/(2L f1read)² then gives 0.1g² = 0.121 kg/m. Perfect integer frequency ratios can survive this common calibration error.

A distinct fixed-free boundary has odd quarter-wave modes fn = (2n − 1)v/(4L). Its first frequency is 2.5 Hz with the same string parameters. That is not a correction to the fixed-fixed graph; it is a different boundary-value problem. Independently weighing a known string length supplies evidence that a repeated shared-clock mode measurement cannot.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
