Use both area integrals for a nonuniform lamina

A planar center of mass requires two first moments over the same area and the same total mass. Our rectangle spans 0 to 2 m east and 0 to 1 m north, with density σ = σ₀(1 + ax + by). The supplied a and b are nonnegative gradients in inverse metres; total mass is fixed at 4 kg.

Learning outcome: Reconstruct each double integral and compare a single-gradient case with the uniform limit. Record density normalization and both first moments.

Starting recap

Integrate signed force and normalized mass moments. Specify the system before conserving momentum, and independently test energy and observation constraints.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At a = 0 and b = 1 m⁻¹, xcm remains 1 m by east-west symmetry and ycm = 5/9 m. Uniform density restores (1, 1/2) m.

Both first moments require integration over the entire lamina, not just one representative edge.

Integrate rho0(1+a x+b y) over x0to2,y0to1. Mass/rho0=2+2a+b; east moment/rho0=2+8a/3+b; north moment/rho0=1+a+2b/3. Divide moments by the same normalized total mass. Uniform density a=b=0 gives(1,.5), and both normalized gradients remain nonnegative throughout the supplied rectangle.

Understand

Use both area integrals for a nonuniform lamina

A planar center of mass requires two first moments over the same area and the same total mass. Our rectangle spans 0 to 2 m east and 0 to 1 m north, with density σ = σ₀(1 + ax + by). The supplied a and b are nonnegative gradients in inverse metres; total mass is fixed at 4 kg.

Integrating over both coordinates gives M/σ₀ = 2 + 2a + b. The east first moment divided by σ₀ is 2 + 8a/3 + b, and the north first moment divided by σ₀ is 1 + a + 2b/3. Divide each by the same mass factor to obtain the two center coordinates.

At a = b = 1 m⁻¹, σ₀ = 0.8 kg/m², xcm = 17/15 m and ycm = 8/15 m. Both shift toward the denser edges, but the shifts differ because the rectangle has different side lengths and coordinate integrals.

Sampling density along one edge cannot replace these area integrals. A point marked at the correct east coordinate but the geometric north midpoint would still miss the northward density gradient. The diagram preserves equal spatial scale; it displays the stipulated mass distribution rather than a measured material sheet.

Changed-case check

Predict before reading the comparison. At a = 0 and b = 1 m⁻¹, xcm remains 1 m by east-west symmetry and ycm = 5/9 m. Uniform density restores (1, 1/2) m.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
