Transform displacement and kinetic energy in the same frame

A constant net force2 N acts on a = 2 kg point for2 s. Its velocity increases by2 m/s, and with initial ground velocity v0 its displacement is2v0+2 m. Ground work is2 times that displacement and equals the ground kinetic-energy change.

Learning outcome: Choose observers giving positive, zero and negative work where supported. Transform both displacements and velocities, and verify the common−UΔp correction.

Starting recap

Use vector dot products for work, gradients for conservative force, definite integrals for accumulation and explicit energy/frame boundaries. Check accessible states before assigning trajectories.

Work and kinetic-energy change are frame dependent in the same way; their equality survives.

Under constant translation U, displacement changes by−UT. With unchanged force, work changes by−U F T=−U Δp. Expanding Kprime=(m/2)(v−U)² gives the same change in ΔK. Negative work in one frame is not a conservation violation; choose one frame consistently for all terms.

Understand

Transform displacement and kinetic energy in the same frame

A constant net force2 N acts on a = 2 kg point for2 s. Its velocity increases by2 m/s, and with initial ground velocity v0 its displacement is2v0+2 m. Ground work is2 times that displacement and equals the ground kinetic-energy change.

An observer translating at constant speed U measures velocity vprime=v−U and displacement Δxprime=Δx−UT. Newtonian net force is unchanged in this inertial translation. Therefore work changes by−UFT=−UΔp, while expanding the difference of m(v−U)²/2 at the endpoints gives exactly the same correction to the kinetic-energy change.

At v(0) = 0,U=2, ground displacement2 m and work4 J correspond to kinetic energy rising from0 to4 J. The translating observer sees displacement−2 m and work−4 J; relative velocity changes from−2 to0, so its kinetic energy falls from4 to0 J. Both accounts satisfy the work-energy theorem.

A negative work in one frame is not a conservation failure or a different physical force. Mixing a ground displacement with observer-relative kinetic energy would create the contradiction. This comparison uses one-dimensional constant Galilean translation, not an accelerating observer or a relativistic force transformation.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
