Transform relative walking into two ground displacements

An internal displacement is not necessarily a ground displacement. Model a point person of mass m on a translating 80 kg base, with no external horizontal force and initially stationary whole-system center. The model specifies only a relative displacement ℓ; it supplies no forces, walking time or energy conversion.

Learning outcome: Solve the weighted center constraint and independently verify the relative-displacement relation. Vary mass at fixed relative displacement.

Starting recap

Integrate signed force and normalized mass moments. Specify the system before conserving momentum, and independently test energy and observation constraints.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At m = 20 kg and ℓ = 2 m, the base moves −0.4 m and the point +1.6 m. The relative difference remains exactly 2 m.

Internal motion changes component positions while the force-free whole-system center remains fixed.

Let base shift d and relative motion ell. The person ground shift is d+ell, so Mbase d+mperson(d+ell)=0. Hence d=−m ell/(Mbase+m). Neither component is stationary in the ground frame simply because the total center is. The model gives endpoint displacement, not a unique time history or separate energy budget.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Transform relative walking into two ground displacements

An internal displacement is not necessarily a ground displacement. Model a point person of mass m on a translating 80 kg base, with no external horizontal force and initially stationary whole-system center. The model specifies only a relative displacement ℓ; it supplies no forces, walking time or energy conversion.

If the base moves by d relative to the ground, the point moves by d + ℓ. Constancy of the whole-system center requires 80d + m(d + ℓ) = 0, giving d = −mℓ/(80 + m). The point’s ground shift is 80ℓ/(80 + m).

With m = 40 kg and ℓ = 3 m, the base shifts −1 m and the point shifts +2 m. Their relative displacement is 3 m and their mass-weighted displacement sum is zero. Assigning +3 m to the point in the ground frame would silently treat the base as fixed.

The endpoint center constraint alone cannot recover a time history, work or kinetic energy. Those would require a motion or interaction model. No physical activity on a movable platform is requested; this is an ideal translation-only system-boundary problem.

Retained investigation

Solve the weighted center constraint and independently verify the relative-displacement relation. Vary mass at fixed relative displacement. Why cannot endpoint displacement data determine kinetic energy?

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
