Use an unused speed to challenge a resistance law

A force observation at one speed can fit different models. Write the synthetic resistance magnitude as Fref(v/vref)^p, where vref=1 m/s and p is1 or2. The ratio is dimensionless, so Fref always has force units. If rewritten as b v or k v², the two fitted coefficients have different dimensions.

Learning outcome: Fit at the common reference, freeze a higher-speed prediction and evaluate the withheld residual for both exponents. Preserve coefficient units.

One calibration speed cannot distinguish two laws that agree at that speed.

Fref(v/vref)^p keeps the power dimensionless. At vref both p1 and p2 give the same force, but at twice vref they predict2Fref and4Fref. A withheld discrepancy challenges the assumed law under the disclosed no-error observations; it does not uniquely determine a real drag mechanism. Additional speeds, error bounds and independent geometry/medium information are needed.

Understand

Use an unused speed to challenge a resistance law

A force observation at one speed can fit different models. Write the synthetic resistance magnitude as Fref(v/vref)^p, where vref=1 m/s and p is1 or2. The ratio is dimensionless, so Fref always has force units. If rewritten as b v or k v², the two fitted coefficients have different dimensions.

At v=vref, both laws give Fref. Fitting a linear coefficient from that observation cannot establish linearity. Freeze the fitted law before revealing the force at2 m/s. Linear response predicts2Fref while quadratic response predicts4Fref.

For Fref=1 N and true p2, the fitted linear coefficient is1 kg/s, the withheld observation4 N and the prediction2 N; residual is+2 N. A second reference-speed repeat would not make this discrimination, even if it reduced random scatter.

The synthetic observations are exact and the two candidate families are supplied. A discrepancy therefore challenges the fitted family under these assumptions, not uniquely identifies a real fluid mechanism. Real data would need error bounds, additional speeds and independently justified medium and geometry conditions. The model does not pretend both coefficients are interchangeable material constants.

Changed case: predict before checking

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
