SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Reject a coupling matrix that permits negative field energy

Signed mutual inductance depends on the reference orientations of two circuits. For a reciprocal linear pair, flux linkages are L1I1+MI2 and MI1+L2I2. The model fixes L1=1 H and L2=4 H, while a proposed M may be positive or negative. Changing the reference direction can change the sign of M without making self-inductance negative.

Learning outcome: Test both signs of M inside and outside the bound. Retain the determinant before evaluating a chosen state, and explain why the mutual term can be negative while the total admissible energy stays nonnegative.

For M=1 H, I1=1 A and I2=−1 A, energy is 0.5+2−1=1.5 J. For M=3 H the determinant is 4−9=−5 H², so the proposal is rejected even if a particular trial current happened to give positive energy. At I2=−1 A its formal value is −0.5 J, exposing the nonpassive quadratic form.

Reject an energetically impossible proposed coupling

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Linear reciprocal coupled inductors L1=1 H,L2=4 H and fixed first current1 A. Proposed M is signed by the declared reference orientations. A passive field-energy matrix requires M²≤L1L2. Invalid proposals report the violated condition but withhold physical energy/flux predictions.

The signed mutual term can lower the total without making a passive quadratic form negative.

Reciprocity gives linkage vector [L1 I1+M I2, M I1+L2 I2]. Integrating source work gives U=(L1 I1²+2M I1I2+L2 I2²)/2. Nonnegative energy for every current pair requires positive self inductances and M²≤L1L2. At equality an ideal perfect-coupling null direction is possible; this does not certify a realizable zero-energy apparatus. A rejected diagnostic curve is explicitly not a physical storage prediction.

Understand

State geometry, sources and initial data

Signed mutual inductance depends on the reference orientations of two circuits. For a reciprocal linear pair, flux linkages are L1I1+MI2 and MI1+L2I2. The model fixes L1=1 H and L2=4 H, while a proposed M may be positive or negative. Changing the reference direction can change the sign of M without making self-inductance negative.

Derive the field or circuit relation

Integrating source work yields U=(L1I1²+2MI1I2+L2I2²)/2. Passive field storage must be nonnegative for every current pair. Completing the square or testing the matrix determinant gives M² no larger than L1L2, so here |M| must not exceed 2 H. It is not enough to find one chosen current pair with positive energy.

Audit energy, uncertainty and domain

An invalid proposed magnitude is rejected before physical linkage or energy is reported. A separately labeled formal quadratic curve can demonstrate the contradiction, but is not a negative-energy device prediction. At the equality boundary, ideal perfect coupling admits a null direction; it does not establish a realizable apparatus free of stray fields and resistance.

Worked original case

For M=1 H, I1=1 A and I2=−1 A, energy is 0.5+2−1=1.5 J. For M=3 H the determinant is 4−9=−5 H², so the proposal is rejected even if a particular trial current happened to give positive energy. At I2=−1 A its formal value is −0.5 J, exposing the nonpassive quadratic form.

Investigation

Test both signs of M inside and outside the bound. Retain the determinant before evaluating a chosen state, and explain why the mutual term can be negative while the total admissible energy stays nonnegative.

Changed-case practice

Try the changed case before feedback

For L1=1 H,L2=4 H,M=−1 H and I1=I2=1 A, find total energy in joules.

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original derivations and synthetic evidence checked 31 October 2026 against the primary explanation. Constants are rounded teaching values and are mutually consistent where Maxwell relations require it. No live circuit, high-voltage, energized-inductor, magnet, beam or optical exposure activity is requested. Retain first work, criterion-linked critique, revision and newly assigned evidence; public numerical feedback is not practical or learner certification.

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which source, initial-state, calibration or field-law premise makes the result conditional, and what unused evidence would challenge it?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.
