Choose the correct branch of enclosed cylindrical charge

For an infinite cylindrical source, symmetry makes the field radial and constant on a coaxial cylindrical side. The end caps have normals along the axis, perpendicular to the field, so they contribute no flux. This reasoning depends on the infinite-source idealization and absence of an external field; a finite tube near an end need not behave this way.

Learning outcome: Compare observations below the core radius, inside the material and outside it. Derive both boundary values independently and check continuity. Explain which new premise would be needed before applying the zero-core conclusion to a finite charged tube.

Starting recap

Review oriented normals, definite integrals, source volume measures and partial derivatives as one-coordinate rates. Potential differences use an explicit reference and field work uses a signed line integral.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At core radius a=0.5 m, the field is zero for r≤0.5 m. At r=1 m, λenc=0.75π nC/m and E=13.5π N/C. At the outer boundary r=2 m, E=33.75π N/C. At r=3 m it is 22.5π N/C, consistent with an exterior inverse-radius law.

A Gaussian cylinder counts the annular volume enclosed, not all charge in the source at every radius.

For r≤a, no charge is enclosed and cylindrical symmetry gives E=0. For a<r<2, line charge is rhoπ(r²−a²); outside it is rhoπ(4−a²). Flux through a coaxial length ell is E2πr ell, with zero end-cap flux, so E=2Klambdaenc/r. The exterior decays as 1/r, not the 1/r² of a finite localized source. The zero-core result depends on the full infinite-source symmetry and no external field.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Define the geometry and reference

For an infinite cylindrical source, symmetry makes the field radial and constant on a coaxial cylindrical side. The end caps have normals along the axis, perpendicular to the field, so they contribute no flux. This reasoning depends on the infinite-source idealization and absence of an external field; a finite tube near an end need not behave this way.

Derive the integral or gradient

The source density is 1 nC/m³ only between core radius a and outer radius 2 m. For r≤a, enclosed charge per length is zero. Within the charged annulus it is ρπ(r²−a²), and outside it is ρπ(4−a²). Using E2πrℓ=λencℓ/ε0 gives E=2Kλenc/r. The arbitrary Gaussian length cancels.

Check the inference boundary

The field is continuous at each material boundary because no separate surface sheet was assigned. It vanishes throughout the uncharged core under the full symmetry premises, but outside it decreases as 1/r, not 1/r². Infinite total source charge is not an unnoticed finite-apparatus approximation: charge per unit length is the well-defined quantity used here.

Worked original case

At core radius a=0.5 m, the field is zero for r≤0.5 m. At r=1 m, λenc=0.75π nC/m and E=13.5π N/C. At the outer boundary r=2 m, E=33.75π N/C. At r=3 m it is 22.5π N/C, consistent with an exterior inverse-radius law.

Investigation

Compare observations below the core radius, inside the material and outside it. Derive both boundary values independently and check continuity. Explain which new premise would be needed before applying the zero-core conclusion to a finite charged tube.

Changed-case practice

Try the changed case before feedback

For core radius a=1 m and observer radius r=3 m, find E/π in N/C.

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original calculations checked 30 October 2026 against the primary explanation. All source distributions, fields and readings are hypothetical. This is not a physical high-voltage or electrical handling activity, and public numerical feedback does not establish independent mastery. Preserve first predictions, critique, revision and newly assigned work in the separate retained course workspace.

Apply

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
