Compare exact dipole geometry with a far-field expansion

Two equal and opposite charges define a dipole moment p=2qd pointing from negative to positive charge when their positions are −d and +d on the x axis. Holding p fixed while varying d requires changing q. Equal moment therefore does not imply equal individual charges or identical near fields.

Learning outcome: Keep p and r fixed while reducing d, retaining the required q and both exact fields. Compare signed and magnitude errors separately. Then explain why a distant field measurement of p alone cannot uniquely recover q and d.

Starting recap

Review signed vector components, definite integrals, radians, density units and elementary derivatives. Distinguish observer coordinates from source integration coordinates.

For p=1 nC m, d=0.5 m and r=2 m, q=1 nC. The exact axial field is 2.56 N/C while its leading approximation is 2.25 N/C, a signed relative error −0.12109375. The exact equatorial field is −9/(4.25)^(3/2) N/C, not simply half the exact axial magnitude.

A shared dipole moment fixes the leading distant field, not the exact near field.

For axial r>d, Kq[(r−d)^(-2)−(r+d)^(-2)]=2Kpr/(r²−d²)². On the equatorial axis the transverse components cancel and Ex=−Kp/(r²+d²)^(3/2). Their leading far fields are 2Kp/r³ and −Kp/r³. Use the exact expressions to quantify when discarding powers of d/r is acceptable.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Define the source and observer

Two equal and opposite charges define a dipole moment p=2qd pointing from negative to positive charge when their positions are −d and +d on the x axis. Holding p fixed while varying d requires changing q. Equal moment therefore does not imply equal individual charges or identical near fields.

Derive before approximating

At an axial observer r>d, subtract the two point-source fields and simplify: Ex=Kq[(r−d)^(-2)−(r+d)^(-2)]=2Kpr/(r²−d²)². At an equatorial observer (0,r), vertical components cancel and Ex=−Kp/(r²+d²)^(3/2). The equatorial field points opposite the moment, unlike the positive axial field.

Check evidence and the domain

When d/r is small, the leading fields are 2Kp/r³ and −Kp/r³. Their ratios to the exact fields are [1−(d/r)²]² and [1+(d/r)²]^(3/2), respectively. Thus the axial approximation underestimates while the equatorial approximation overestimates magnitude. Quantify a tolerance using these exact ratios rather than declaring any nonzero distance to be far away.

Worked original case

For p=1 nC m, d=0.5 m and r=2 m, q=1 nC. The exact axial field is 2.56 N/C while its leading approximation is 2.25 N/C, a signed relative error −0.12109375. The exact equatorial field is −9/(4.25)^(3/2) N/C, not simply half the exact axial magnitude.

Investigation

Keep p and r fixed while reducing d, retaining the required q and both exact fields. Compare signed and magnitude errors separately. Then explain why a distant field measurement of p alone cannot uniquely recover q and d.

Changed-case practice

Try the changed case before feedback

For p=1 nC m, d=0.5 m and axial r=1 m, find the exact axial field in N/C.

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original derivations and numerical packets checked 30 October 2026 against the primary explanation. The electrostatic field construction also uses continuous source integration. All records are synthetic; no electrical apparatus, high-voltage handling or practical certification is requested. Public feedback is not independent mastery; retain first predictions, alternative models and criterion-linked critique in the separate course evidence workspace.

Dipole moment definition and orientation independently support the parameter convention. The exact source-pair simplification and error comparisons above are original derivations.

Apply

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
