Integrate an arc while total charge stays fixed

Parameterizing a curved source requires its length element. A circular arc of radius R at angle φ has ds=R dφ when φ is in radians. For a uniform arc from −θ to +θ carrying fixed charge Q, λ=Q/(2θR). Changing the angle while holding Q fixed therefore changes its line density.

Learning outcome: Compare half-angles 30°,90°,180° at fixed Q and radius. Retain the radian conversion, λ and center-field vector. Then double R on paper and explain the field scaling under fixed Q versus fixed λ.

Starting recap

Review signed vector components, definite integrals, radians, density units and elementary derivatives. Distinguish observer coordinates from source integration coordinates.

Try

For Q=2 nC, R=1 m and half-angle θ=90°=π/2, λ=2/π nC/m and Ex=−36/π≈−11.459156 N/C. Ey=0. At the same radius and fixed Q, a full ring gives exactly zero center field.

Integrate a curved source at fixed total charge

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · A uniform positive 2 nC arc centered at the origin lies at angles −θ to +θ around the positive x axis. Observe the center. Q is fixed as angle changes, so λ=Q/(2θR), with θ in radians. The complete 360-degree ring has exactly zero center field by symmetry.

The arc-length Jacobian and the fixed-charge normalization both depend on radius and angle.

dq=λR dφ and the center-point displacement reverses the radial unit vector. Hence Ex=−Kλ/R times integral cosφ dφ=−KQ sinθ/(R²θ), while Ey cancels. The θ→0 limit is a point source at (R,0); θ=π is a full ring with exactly zero field. Holding λ instead would change Q and answer a different question.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Define the source and observer

Parameterizing a curved source requires its length element. A circular arc of radius R at angle φ has ds=R dφ when φ is in radians. For a uniform arc from −θ to +θ carrying fixed charge Q, λ=Q/(2θR). Changing the angle while holding Q fixed therefore changes its line density.

Derive before approximating

At the center, every element is R away and its positive-source field points opposite the radial unit vector. Integrating the horizontal projection gives Ex=−Kλ/R times the integral of cosφ, or −KQ sinθ/(R²θ). The vertical sine projection cancels. Degrees must be converted before using θ in the density normalization and the denominator.

Check evidence and the domain

As θ approaches zero at fixed Q, the result approaches one point source at (R,0). At θ=π the arc becomes a full ring, whose field at the center is exactly zero by symmetry. That zero is not numerical evidence that Q vanished. Holding λ fixed instead of Q would produce a different family; state the controlled quantity before interpreting a graph.

Worked original case

For Q=2 nC, R=1 m and half-angle θ=90°=π/2, λ=2/π nC/m and Ex=−36/π≈−11.459156 N/C. Ey=0. At the same radius and fixed Q, a full ring gives exactly zero center field.

Investigation

Compare half-angles 30°,90°,180° at fixed Q and radius. Retain the radian conversion, λ and center-field vector. Then double R on paper and explain the field scaling under fixed Q versus fixed λ.

Changed-case practice

Try the changed case before feedback

For Q=2 nC, R=2 m and half-angle 90°, find Ex in N/C.

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original derivations and numerical packets checked 30 October 2026 against the primary explanation. The electrostatic field construction also uses continuous source integration. All records are synthetic; no electrical apparatus, high-voltage handling or practical certification is requested. Public feedback is not independent mastery; retain first predictions, alternative models and criterion-linked critique in the separate course evidence workspace.

Apply

At fixed Q and arc angle, doubling R changes the center-field magnitude by which factor?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which geometry, calibration or source assumption could fail while an exact arithmetic fit remains possible?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
