Reason from particle access to entropy change

Predict the sign of a system entropy change while distinguishing it from the total entropy criterion.

Learning outcome: Predict the sign of a system entropy change while distinguishing it from the total entropy criterion.

Starting recap

Entropy measures the multiplicity of compatible microscopic arrangements, not a visual score for untidiness.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

Compare 1 mol expanding twofold with 2 mol expanding twofold at the same temperature.

Open the experiment

Predict

Will doubling the amount have the same effect as doubling the volume ratio?

Experiment

Compare amount 1 and 2 mol at volume ratio 2, then compare ratios 2 and 4 at 1 mol. Record the logarithmic distinction.

Compare ideal-gas entropy changes

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original isothermal ideal-gas expansion/comparison; ΔS = nR ln(Vf/Vi). No rate, heat-transfer path or measured data. Absolute temperature is held constant.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

More accessible gas volume increases system entropy at fixed temperature.

Doubling amount doubles ΔS; doubling a volume ratio does not double its logarithm. A reverse compression has the opposite entropy change. System entropy alone is not the universe entropy balance.

Predict before changing a control. Save two contrasting captures and explain what is held fixed. Displayed digits are calculation precision, not experimental uncertainty.

Understand

A larger set of possibilities

Imagine a gas particle allowed to occupy either half of a divided vessel. Remove the partition without changing the total gas amount or temperature. More positions are accessible. For many particles the number of compatible arrangements grows rapidly. Entropy connects that multiplicity to a macroscopic state quantity. It is not a count of collisions or a rate of spreading.

For an ideal gas at constant temperature, the entropy difference is ΔS = nR ln(Vf/Vi). The ratio must be dimensionless. With n = 1 mol and Vf/Vi = 2, ΔS ≈ 5.763 J/K. Two moles under that same ratio give about 11.526 J/K. One mole under ratio 4 also gives 11.526 J/K because ln 4 = 2 ln 2. These are two different routes to the same numerical entropy change; the states are not identical.

Translate a particle argument cautiously

Melting and vaporization usually increase a substance’s entropy because accessible positional and energetic arrangements increase. Heating a fixed phase also generally increases entropy. More gas particles on the product side often indicate a positive reaction entropy, but a rule of thumb does not replace a species ledger when numerical entropies are supplied. Comparing two unrelated substances solely by how messy their pictures appear is unreliable.

Mixing or dissolution can free solute particles while also constraining solvent arrangements. The net result requires both contributions. Likewise, a system may lose entropy while transferring enough heat to its surroundings that total entropy rises. A freezing sample is not a violation of the second law.

Construct and test a claim

Use the investigation to isolate one variable. First hold volume ratio at 2 and vary amount. Then hold amount at 1 mol and vary the ratio. Write a claim about proportionality that fits both data series. These are computed teaching cases, not repeated measurements.

For a reverse isothermal compression from 4V back to V, the system entropy change is −R ln 4 per mole. The sign reversal follows because entropy is a state function. It does not establish a feasible isolated process: compression requires an environment and a work/heat account. Explain why the system result alone cannot decide whether a real process occurs.

Changed case

A gas is compressed to half its initial volume isothermally. Predict the sign, calculate ΔS per mole, and identify what you must know to judge total entropy. The answer is −5.763 J/(mol K) for the gas; the surroundings’ entropy change is missing. This explicit missing-information response is more informative than declaring the process impossible.

Follow energetic as well as positional possibilities

Compare the same fixed amount of a classical ideal gas at fixed volume before and after heating within one phase. Its equilibrium kinetic-energy distribution spreads toward higher energies, and energy can be distributed among particles in more ways. This contributes to increased entropy even though the accessible volume has not increased. The statement concerns a distribution: it does not mean every particle at the higher temperature has more energy than every particle at the lower temperature, or that entropy measures a collision rate.

Changed-case action: Sketch two qualitative energy distributions on common kinetic-energy axes, normalizing each to the same particle count. Indicate the higher-energy tail after heating. Then contrast an isothermal compression of the same gas: predict which energetic and positional features change before reading the feedback.

Compare energy and position constraints

Heating shifts and broadens the thermal energy distribution, increasing the higher-energy tail while conserving particle count. Isothermal ideal-gas compression leaves the equilibrium kinetic-energy distribution at the same temperature unchanged but reduces accessible positional volume, giving negative system entropy change. Heating and compression therefore cannot be reduced to one claim that particles move faster. Neither sketch establishes the surroundings' entropy or a real process rate.

Conceptual support: OpenStax entropy, checked 31 October 2026. The requested sketches are original qualitative comparisons, not measured distributions.

Apply

For 1 mol of an ideal gas expanding isothermally from V to 4V, how does ΔS compare with expansion from V to 2V?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Show your calculation or representation, explain the changed case, and separate the stated model from measured evidence. Predict the sign of a system entropy change while distinguishing it from the total entropy criterion.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
