Resolve circular acceleration and test force constraints

Differentiate angular motion and combine perpendicular acceleration components before judging feasibility.

Learning outcome: Compare angular accelerations 0,1,2,3 and times 0,1,2. Derive tangent/normal components, required forces and the capacity screen; distinguish instantaneous angular speed from a true period.

Starting recap

Resolve recipient-specific forces, integrate the stated model and test its domain and constraints.

Resolve tangential and normal acceleration from angular motion

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Mass 2 kg on horizontal circle radius 1 m, theta=t+alpha t²/2, omega=1+alpha t. Ideal radial connector supplies inward force, independent tangential drive changes speed; gravity and support cancel vertically. Connector capacity 50 N is a stipulated feasibility screen, not real design advice.

The prescribed circular motion passes the stated radial-force screen.

Differentiate theta to omega and alpha, then use at=r alpha and an=r omega². These perpendicular accelerations add as vectors. Only alpha=0 supports one constant period 2pi/omega; instantaneous 2pi/omega is not generally the actual next-revolution time.

Derive before checking. Retain contrasting captures and explain one assumption that could fail; calculated evidence is not actual laboratory work.

Understand

Derive two acceleration components

For a circle of fixed radius r, angular velocity is omega=dtheta/dt and angular acceleration alpha=domega/dt. Tangential speed is r omega, so tangential acceleration is r alpha. Changing direction gives inward acceleration r omega²=v²/r. Their directions are perpendicular, so total acceleration magnitude is√[(r alpha)²+(r omega²)²]. Centripetal is a description of the net inward requirement, not a new interaction to add to tension or gravity.

Work the prescribed changing-speed motion

The packet uses theta=t+alpha t²/2, r=1 and mass 2. At alpha=2,t=1, omega=3 rad/s, inward acceleration 9 and tangential acceleration 2 m/s². The required radial connector force is 18 N and the separate tangential drive 4 N. A purely radial force could not produce this specified speed increase. Weight and normal support cancel vertically in the stated horizontal setup.

Respect a force-capacity boundary

The supplied connector can provide at most 50 N. At alpha=3,t=2, omega=7 and required radial force 98 N exceed that bound. The displayed circular trajectory is then infeasible under the stipulated connector, not a valid prediction of continued constrained motion. The model gives no postfailure trajectory or real load rating. A constraint must be tested rather than assumed indefinitely.

Distinguish uniform period from instantaneous speed

For uniform motion, one revolution has arc length 2πr, so T=2πr/v and f=1/T. With changing omega, instantaneous 2π/omega is not generally the next-revolution time; integrate omega over the interval to find angular displacement 2π. For a circular gravitational orbit, combining GMm/r²=mv²/r with the period relation gives T²=4π²r³/(GM). At fixed central mass, quadrupling orbital radius multiplies period by 8, not 4.

Resolve banked and conical constraints

On a frictionless bank of angle theta above horizontal, normal components satisfy Ncos theta=mg and Nsin theta=mv²/r, so tan theta=v²/(rg). With v=6,r=12,g=10, tan theta=.3 and theta≈16.70°. If friction is present, its direction depends on the tendency to slide and its magnitude must satisfy the static bound; it is not automatically downhill or at its maximum.

For a conical pendulum with string angle theta from vertical, Tcos theta=mg and Tsin theta=mv²/r. At theta=30°, m=2,g=10, tension 20/cos 30°≈23.094 N and the required v²/r=10tan30°≈5.7735 m/s². These angle conventions differ geometrically even though the component ratios look similar. The pendulum’s radius also depends on string length, so it is not an independently adjustable parameter without changing geometry.

Test unilateral contact at the top of a vertical loop

This separate virtual case places a point-model body against the inside of a frictionless circular track. At the top, inward is downward: gravity and the inward contact normal give mg+N=mv²/r. A surface can push but cannot pull, so N≥0 requires v²≥gr. The limiting top speed is sqrt(gr); at that limit N=0, not mg=0. This is a local contact condition, not a complete launch-height or whole-path guarantee.

With g=10 m/s² and r=2 m, predict the limiting speed before checking sqrt20≈4.4721 m/s. For m=3 kg and v=5 m/s, N=3×25/2−30=7.5 N. Change only radius to8 m: the limiting speed doubles to sqrt80≈8.9443 m/s; the old5 m/s state would require a negative normal and is not a valid maintained-contact solution. A rigid rod able to push and pull is a different bilateral constraint; its force need not obey this surface-normal bound. No loop apparatus or physical trial is requested.

Transfer and explain the interaction

For m=3,v=4,r=2, inward net force is 24 N. State whether a connector, contact force, gravity or a combination supplies it; do not add an extra force called centripetal. A circle alone does not establish uniform speed, and a correct acceleration formula does not prove that the available interactions can maintain the path.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
