SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Defend independent evidence rather than shared model agreement

Compare methods, identify a shared error and retain a discriminating evidence plan.

Learning outcome: Retain three method estimates and both conditional reading intervals for an unbiased and a biased packet. Write at least two alternative explanations, then specify an observation that would discriminate them without reusing the disputed reference. Complete the cumulative mixed tasks and keep reviewer critique, answer-exposure disclosures and revised reasoning in the versioned portfolio.

Starting recap

Choose systems and intervals before laws, retain initial conditions and challenge shared evidence assumptions.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With clock gain1.05 and force gain1, both dynamic methods infer8/1.05²≈7.256236 N/m while static force/extension gives8 N/m. Agreement of the two dynamic methods is therefore not independent validation. Their reading-bound interval can remain narrow around a biased value.

Challenge agreement caused by a shared clock

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Synthetic true m=2 kg,k=8 N/m, exact lengths/mass. Period and acceleration-displacement methods share one clock gain; independent static force readings use another specified gain. Separate indicated reading bounds:1% period,2% force,1% extension. Bounds exclude hidden gains and are not statistical confidence or calibration evidence.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Two dynamic methods can agree because the same clock error enters both with the same inverse-square factor.

From reported u=g t, second derivatives scale1/g² and periods scaleg, so both dynamic stiffness estimates equal true k/g². Static F/x instead carries the force gain. The reported intervals cover stipulated independent reading bounds around indicated quantities, not the hidden calibration gains. Method agreement, interval overlap or a generator truth label is not independent real-world validation.

Derive before checking. Retain contrasting captures and explain one assumption that could fail; calculated evidence is not actual laboratory work.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Begin with what each method observes

The synthetic oscillator has known generator mass2 kg and stiffness8 N/m. One dynamic method estimates stiffness from period using k=4pi²m/T². A second estimates it from the slope of acceleration versus displacement, k=−m da/dx. A static method uses the slope of applied balancing force versus extension. A generator label is useful for checking the exercise, but is not an actual independent measurement of a real spring.

Propagate a shared clock through two routes

If reported time is u=g t, indicated period is gT and second derivatives scale by1/g². Both dynamic stiffness estimates therefore equal8/g². Their agreement can be exact while both are biased. The static method has no time derivative but carries its own indicated-force gain h, so its estimate is8h when lengths are stipulated exact. Disagreement identifies an inconsistency, not automatically which instrument is wrong.

Keep reading bounds separate from calibration

For an indicated dynamic stiffness kd, a separate1% period-reading interval gives conditional stiffness bounds kd/1.01² to kd/.99². For indicated static ks with2% force and1% extension bounds, the ratio lies from ks(.98/1.01) to ks(1.02/.99). These are conservative endpoint bounds under stated reading limits, not confidence intervals. They do not include the hidden time/force gains and cannot certify coverage of the true stiffness.

Design a discriminating check

An independent timing reference can test a clock gain; an independently established force reference can test the static force gain. Repeating more trials with the same clock improves some random precision without necessarily testing its scale. A new method must be traced back to its instruments and assumptions before it is called independent. The same principle applies to torque/inertia, orbital parameters and pendulum timing across the course.

Separate authored completion from performed evidence

The final portfolio requires retained first predictions, calculations, synthetic captures, unfamiliar transfer, critique and revision across all seven units. Actual empirical evidence needs honest raw observations, instrument records and qualified review. Current AP guidance requires a minimum laboratory-time component; where onsite access is prevented, qualifying virtual/simulation work can count only with the specified student work, educator supervision and retained records. Merely authoring these pages or clicking through them establishes none of that time, supervision, approval or mastery.

Public numerical transfer practice

Try a new practice case

If true stiffness is8 N/m and the reported clock gain is2, what stiffness do both dynamic methods infer in N/m?

This public, unsaved check is not a secure assessment. Explain the derivative, integral or boundary in the retained course evidence workspace.

Sources and evidence boundary

Original derivations and assigned numerical cases checked 30 October 2026 against the official AP Physics C Mechanics framework and OpenStax mechanics and official laboratory guidance. These are supplied or generated records, not physical measurements or performed laboratory time. Do not construct rotating equipment, release loads or conduct launch experiments. Public feedback and retained self-reports do not certify independent mastery.

Apply

What can exact agreement of two methods sharing the same clock establish by itself?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Why is adding another calculation based on the same timestamps not necessarily adding independent evidence?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
