SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Audit an impulse window before accepting endpoint agreement

Separate missing force tails, baseline accumulation and an independent momentum comparison.

Learning outcome: Compare h=.5,1,1.5 at B=.5, then set B=0. Retain all error terms separately and propose a baseline observation outside the pulse. Explain how opposite errors could produce misleading agreement.

Starting recap

Integrate net external force, preserve vector and system boundaries, and test collision and evidence assumptions independently.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

h=.5,B=.5 gives true captured 11, missing 5, baseline+.5 and indicated 11.5 N s. Enlarging to h=1 removes missing tails but leaves indicated 17 rather than 16.

A wider integration window can capture omitted tails while accumulating more baseline bias.

Integrate the real pulse only over its0–2 s support, then add the offset across the entire observation window. Missing-tail and baseline terms can accidentally cancel, so agreement with delta-p is not proof of an unbiased force sensor. Time calibration and all external forces remain separate evidence.

Derive before checking. Retain contrasting captures and explain one assumption that could fail; calculated evidence is not actual laboratory work.

Understand

Specify an original pulse and its support

The teacher-known net pulse is F=12t(2−t) N over 0–2 s and zero outside. Its full integral is 16 N s. A rectangular observation window is centered at t=1 with half-width h. The instrument illustration adds a constant indicated offset B throughout the entire window, including times when true force is zero.

Integrate only the actual overlap

Use primitive 12t²−4t³ for the pulse. The captured true impulse is the primitive difference between max(0,1−h) and min(2,1+h). Missing-tail impulse is 16 minus that quantity. The offset contribution is B times the full duration 2h, not only the pulse-overlap duration.

Compare wider windows without a blanket rule

At h=.5, true captured impulse is 11 N s. With B=.5 N, indicated integral is 11.5. At h=1 the full pulse is captured but the same offset adds 1 N s, giving 17. At h=1.5, no extra true impulse appears and the offset grows to 1.5, giving 17.5. Wider is not automatically better when baseline bias is present.

Challenge accidental agreement

A positive offset can partly compensate for missing positive tails. An indicated integral close to an independently estimated 16 N s momentum change can therefore hide two errors of opposite sign. Compare raw pre/post baseline records, multiple windows and independently calibrated velocities rather than accepting one agreement as proof of accuracy.

Plan an independent evidence chain

The pulse generator, time bounds and comparison momentum are supplied for practice, not actual sensor data. A real study must identify every external force, define the mass/system, verify timing, retain uncertainty and distinguish a selected contact-force impulse from net impulse. The exact polynomial window arithmetic is optional enrichment; the core task is a justified force-area and momentum comparison.

Worked original case

h=.5,B=.5 gives true captured 11, missing 5, baseline+.5 and indicated 11.5 N s. Enlarging to h=1 removes missing tails but leaves indicated 17 rather than 16.

Investigation

Compare h=.5,1,1.5 at B=.5, then set B=0. Retain all error terms separately and propose a baseline observation outside the pulse. Explain how opposite errors could produce misleading agreement.

Public numerical transfer practice

Try a new practice case

At half-width 1.5 s and offset−.5 N, what is indicated impulse in N s?

This public, unsaved check is not a secure assessment. Explain the derivative, integral or boundary in the retained course evidence workspace.

Sources and evidence boundary

Original content checked 30 October 2026 against the official AP Physics C Mechanics framework and OpenStax University Physics momentum. Packets are supplied/generated, not performed collisions or instrument measurements. No physical impact, release, explosive materials or moving machinery is requested. Public solutions and virtual captures do not certify independent mastery or supervised laboratory work.

Apply

Does a wider force-integration window always reduce total impulse error?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

What independent evidence would distinguish missing tails from a coherent offset?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
