SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Integrate power without confusing one interaction with net work

Compare an instantaneous dot product, interval-average power and cumulative work.

Learning outcome: Compare a=1 and−1 at T=2. Derive each power curve, find any sign change and integrate signed areas. Explain what extra evidence would be needed to infer net kinetic-energy change.

Starting recap

Derive the integral or derivative, preserve the system boundary, and reject physically inaccessible continuations.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

a=1,T=2 gives W=28/3 J, average 14/3 W, endpoint 10 W. With a=−1, power crosses zero at t=1 and becomes negative afterward, while prior transferred work remains part of the interval integral.

Does endpoint instantaneous power generally equal interval-average power?

Integrate selected-interaction power over time

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Prescribed x=t²,y=t in SI units and selected force (at,2) N. Power may change sign. Other interactions enforce the trajectory, so selected-force work is not automatically total kinetic-energy change.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Instantaneous power is F·v; its integral is selected-interaction work.

Negative power removes mechanical energy through this interaction, even if other interactions supply more. Average power is work/duration, not generally endpoint power. This imposed path does not assert the selected force is the net force.

Derive before checking. Retain contrasting captures and explain one assumption that could fail; calculated evidence is not actual laboratory work.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Differentiate energy transfer in time

For a selected force, instantaneous power is dW/dt=F·v. Average power over a finite duration is total selected work divided by that duration. These quantities coincide only under special histories, not simply because the same units are used. Power can be negative when the interaction removes energy.

Use the actual vector velocity

The supplied path is x=t²,y=t in SI numerical form, so velocity is (2t,1). The selected force is (at,2) N. Their dot product gives P(t)=2at²+2 W. Multiplying force magnitude by speed would miss the angle and lose sign, especially when a is negative.

Integrate the history

Over 0≤t≤T, selected work is 2aT³/3+2T. Dividing by T gives average power 2aT²/3+2, while the endpoint instantaneous power is 2aT²+2. For a=1,T=2, work 28/3 J, average 14/3 W and endpoint 10 W are three distinct quantities.

Retain the interaction boundary

The path is prescribed and other interactions may be needed to enforce it. The displayed force is selected, not declared net. Therefore its power does not alone determine the derivative of the object’s entire kinetic energy. A negative selected work can coexist with increasing K if other interactions supply more energy.

Challenge a constant-power shortcut

For an ideal net constant power P applied to a positive-speed mass, K=K 0+Pt and speed=sqrt(2K/m). The required along-motion force is P/v. Extending nonzero constant power down to exactly zero speed would require unbounded force in this idealization. A real start needs a different force-limited phase; the algebra is not an actuator specification.

Worked original case

Public numerical transfer practice

Try a new practice case

For force(3,4) N and velocity(2,−1) m/s, what is instantaneous selected power in watts?

This public, unsaved check is not a secure assessment. Explain the derivative, integral or boundary in the retained course evidence workspace.

Sources and evidence boundary

Original teaching, values and calculations, checked 30 October 2026 against the official calculus-based Mechanics framework and OpenStax work and kinetic energy. The numerical packets are supplied or generated, not measured apparatus records. No physical launch, machinery, loading or field intervention is requested. Public feedback and virtual captures do not establish independent mastery or supervised laboratory participation.

Apply

Does endpoint instantaneous power generally equal interval-average power?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Why is a constant-power model singular at a zero-speed start?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
