Identify a finite return capacity without a diagnostic threshold

Tubular reabsorption uses membrane pathways with finite transport capacity, and the filtered amount depends on both filtration rate and plasma concentration. A transporter limit is an amount per time, not automatically a concentration. Converting one into a threshold requires the filtration rate and an explicit model of nephron behavior.

Learning outcome: Compare concentrations across the ideal threshold at fixed Tm, then vary Tm. Retain equality as a zero-spill boundary and distinguish a concentration threshold from an amount-rate maximum.

Starting recap

Trace digestive and renal anatomy, conserve nutrient, solute and water ledgers, and distinguish metabolic, storage, binding and feasible uptake under explicitly supplied nonclinical boundaries.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At concentration4 and Tm6, filtered load8 gives reabsorbed6 and excreted2. Ideal threshold concentration is 3 and fraction of filtered load excreted is 2/8=0.25.

Predict

Can a higher plasma concentration increase excretion even when the reabsorption amount has stopped increasing?

Separate filtered load from finite tubular transport

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original filtration rate 2 volume/time, filtered load 2a. Reabsorption is min(filtered load,Tm), excretion remainder, no secretion. Theoretical concentration threshold Tm/2; no nephron heterogeneity/splay and no real glucose or diagnostic threshold.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A finite transport capacity creates a boundary between complete return and a nonzero remainder.

The sharp threshold is an ideal identical-nephron model. Real transport and nephron heterogeneity smooth the transition; no value here represents actual glucose, a diagnosis or a clinical intervention threshold.

Understand

1. Trace the anatomical pathway

2. Define the mechanism and boundary

The original generic solute is filtered at volume rate 2, so filtered load is 2C. Return is the smaller of this load and a transport maximum Tm; secretion is absent. Excreted remainder is 2C−min(2C,Tm). The ideal onset of spill occurs when concentration exceeds Tm/2, with equality still giving zero remainder.

Changing filtration would change the concentration at which the same transport maximum is reached. Real nephrons also differ and transport transitions can be gradual rather than sharply simultaneous. The model’s single abrupt boundary is therefore a mathematical simplification, not a measured renal threshold for a person.

The solute is unnamed and all values arbitrary. The task is to distinguish load, capacity, returned amount and remainder while conserving material. It does not interpret a glucose result, label disease or recommend altering transport or filtration.

3. Reconstruct the original evidence

At concentration4 and Tm6, filtered load8 gives reabsorbed6 and excreted2. Ideal threshold concentration is 3 and fraction of filtered load excreted is 2/8=0.25.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can a higher plasma concentration increase excretion even when the reabsorption amount has stopped increasing?

Compare concentrations across the ideal threshold at fixed Tm, then vary Tm. Retain equality as a zero-spill boundary and distinguish a concentration threshold from an amount-rate maximum.

5. Defend a changed metabolic case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

At concentration3 and Tm6, what is excretion? At concentration5 with the same Tm, what changes?

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

At equality the filtered6 is fully reabsorbed and excretion0. At concentration5, filtered10 still returns6 and leaves4 excreted; the same capacity now handles a smaller fraction of the load.

6. Preserve a bounded explanation

Retain your first prediction, full units and conservation checks, an alternative mechanism and a discriminating observation in the Anatomy course workspace. These invented data are not individual physiological values. Do not perform breath-holding, forced breathing, exercise challenges, urine or blood sampling or personal measurements. Public answer exposure does not establish independent learner or practical competence.

At C3,Tm6 and filtration2, the model predicts:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At concentration3 and Tm6, what is excretion? At concentration5 with the same Tm, what changes?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
