Separate absorptive capacity from available nutrient supply

Small-intestinal folds, villi and epithelial microvilli create a large exchange surface, but surface area alone does not determine absorption. Apical and basolateral transport proteins, local concentration, transit, digestion and perfusion jointly constrain movement. Some solutes use coupled active transport, others facilitated or passive processes; the epithelial cell is a polarized barrier rather than an empty hole.

Learning outcome: Compare areas1,2,3 at concentration1 and then3. Retain supply, capacity, actual uptake and outgoing amount; identify which boundary limits each case.

Starting recap

Trace digestive and renal anatomy, conserve nutrient, solute and water ledgers, and distinguish metabolic, storage, binding and feasible uptake under explicitly supplied nonclinical boundaries.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At surface factor 2 and concentration3, supply is 6 and capacity is 24/5=4.8 amount/time. Uptake4.8 leaves1.2 unabsorbed, so fraction absorbed0.8. Raising area to 3 would make capacity 7.2, but actual uptake is capped at supply6.

Can a larger transport surface fail to increase uptake even when its capacity increases?

Experiment

Separate absorptive capacity from incoming nutrient supply

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original wall capacity A×4C/(2+C) amount/time, incoming flow 2 volume/time and supply 2C. Actual uptake is minimum of capacity and supply; outlet amount closes the balance. Uniform concentration approximation, no axial gradients or feeding recommendation.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Increasing surface capacity cannot absorb more nutrient than the modeled stream supplies.

Villi and microvilli increase epithelial area, but carrier saturation, residence time and perfusion can also limit transport. The uniform supplied concentration approximation is not a full intestinal flow reactor or a feeding calculation.

Understand

1. Trace the anatomical pathway

2. Define the mechanism and boundary

The original uniform-concentration approximation supplies concentration C in a stream with flow 2. Incoming amount rate is therefore2C. The wall has a separately stipulated saturable capacity 4AC/(2+C), where A is a surface factor. Actual uptake is the smaller of this capacity and the available supply. The outgoing unabsorbed amount is supply minus uptake.

This finite supply cap is essential: a transport-capacity formula alone could request more nutrient than arrives. Increasing surface factor can cease to change uptake once supply is limiting. At another concentration, a larger supply may make the same wall capacity limiting again. The model separates mechanisms by comparing amount rates and fractions, not by calling every plateau a damaged epithelium.

The stated concentration is used throughout the wall-capacity expression, rather than solved along a spatially depleted intestinal segment. A detailed flow-reactor model would need a concentration profile and residence time. These original coefficients do not estimate a person’s absorption, identify a digestive disorder or prescribe a meal.

3. Reconstruct the original evidence

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can a larger transport surface fail to increase uptake even when its capacity increases?

Compare areas1,2,3 at concentration1 and then3. Retain supply, capacity, actual uptake and outgoing amount; identify which boundary limits each case.

5. Defend a changed metabolic case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

At area 3 and concentration1, find supply, capacity, uptake and remainder.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

Supply2, capacity 4, actual uptake 2 and remainder0. The capacity exceeds supply, but the model neither creates nutrients nor forces negative outgoing amount.

6. Preserve a bounded explanation

Retain your first prediction, full units and conservation checks, an alternative mechanism and a discriminating observation in the Anatomy course workspace. These invented data are not individual physiological values. Do not perform breath-holding, forced breathing, exercise challenges, urine or blood sampling or personal measurements. Public answer exposure does not establish independent learner or practical competence.

When computed wall capacity exceeds incoming supply, actual uptake is:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At area 3 and concentration1, find supply, capacity, uptake and remainder.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
