Reconstruct sarcomere bands without shortening the filaments

A skeletal muscle contains fascicles, fibers, myofibrils and repeated sarcomeres. A muscle fiber is a multinucleate cell, not a bundle of independent cells. Endomysial, perimysial and epimysial connective tissues organize and transmit force across these scales. Within a myofibril, Z lines bound a sarcomere and thin filaments extend toward its center.

Learning outcome: Compare L=2.4 and 3.6 with thin length 1. Retain all band boundaries, then reduce thin length to 0.8 without claiming this is a physiological contraction mechanism. Explain why overlap and activation are separate evidence.

Starting recap

Connect integumentary and musculoskeletal structures to explicit material, geometric, activation and mechanical boundaries; separate anatomy from clinical and safe-loading claims.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At L=2.4 and thin length 1, A band is 1.6, total I band 0.8, H zone 0.4 and total overlap 1.2 μm. Reducing L to 2.2 changes I to 0.6 and H to 0.2 while A and each filament length stay fixed.

Predict

Which band length should remain unchanged when filaments slide in this ideal geometry?

Experiment

Keep filament length fixed while a sarcomere changes length

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Centered thick filament length 1.6, thin filaments extend inward from each Z line. Supported range avoids opposing thin-filament overlap. A-band length stays 1.6; I-band total per sarcomere=L−1.6; H-zone=max(0,L−2thin) capped at 1.6. Geometric overlap does not alone predict force.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Sliding changes band overlap without shortening the thick or thin filaments.

At long separation overlap can vanish even though filaments remain intact. The H-zone cannot exceed the thick filament itself. This geometry alone does not predict crossbridge availability, calcium activation or force.

Understand

1. Identify the structure and functional question

2. Connect architecture, mechanism and assumptions

Thick myosin filaments occupy the A band. The I-band regions contain thin filaments without thick overlap, and the H zone contains thick filaments without thin overlap. Sliding-filament contraction changes relative overlap; the actin and myosin filaments do not simply shrink. A band description is a spatial statement, not direct evidence that crossbridges are cycling or calcium is elevated.

The original geometry fixes thick length at 1.6 μm and thin length at b from each Z line, with Z-to-Z distance L. Total I-band length within one sarcomere is L−1.6. H-zone length is L−2b, limited between zero and 1.6; total thick/thin overlap is max(0,2b+1.6−L). The supported range avoids opposing thin-filament overlap, and the lengths are illustrative rather than measurements from the actual cardiac image in Module 1.

At sufficiently large separation, overlap disappears while filament lengths remain unchanged. Force additionally depends on activation, crossbridge kinetics, arrangement and load; geometry alone cannot predict a person’s strength. Keep skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle regulation distinct even when some molecular machinery is shared. No physical stretch or contraction measurement is requested.

3. Reconstruct the original worked case

At L=2.4 and thin length 1, A band is 1.6, total I band 0.8, H zone 0.4 and total overlap 1.2 μm. Reducing L to 2.2 changes I to 0.6 and H to 0.2 while A and each filament length stay fixed.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Which band length should remain unchanged when filaments slide in this ideal geometry?

Compare L=2.4 and 3.6 with thin length 1. Retain all band boundaries, then reduce thin length to 0.8 without claiming this is a physiological contraction mechanism. Explain why overlap and activation are separate evidence.

5. Transfer to a changed mechanism or boundary

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

At L=3.2 and thin length 0.8, calculate A, total I, H and overlap.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

A=1.6, total I=1.6, H=1.6 and overlap=0 μm. Thin filament tips meet the thick filament endpoints without overlapping; intact filaments alone do not guarantee force.

6. Retain a bounded functional explanation

Preserve first predictions, settings, complete quantities and an independent observation that could reject the explanation in the Anatomy and Physiology course workspace. Public feedback and invented models are not clinical evaluation, supervised specimen work or independently assessed reasoning. No physical exercise, temperature exposure, electrical stimulation, personal measurements or treatment is requested.

Supporting anatomical mechanism, checked 30 October 2026. Original teaching prose, numerical packets, schematic diagrams and exercises; no real physiological measurement or injury threshold is inferred.

Apply

During the supplied sliding comparison, which remains 1.6 μm?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At L=3.2 and thin length 0.8, calculate A, total I, H and overlap.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
