Separate preserving a medullary gradient from generating it

Kidney loops and medullary blood vessels have countercurrent arrangements, but they do not perform identical jobs. Selective water permeability and salt transport in loop segments, together with flow and urea recycling, contribute to the medullary osmotic environment. Vascular exchange can reduce washout of that environment while still carrying reabsorbed material away.

Learning outcome: Reconstruct every signed local transfer and the net carrier/environment balance. Compare deep-turn concentration with final return concentration, then name the loop transport and water mechanisms intentionally missing from this exchanger.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

An exchanging return path can give back part of the acquired solute without generating the surrounding gradient.

The surrounding concentrations are independently maintained, not created by this exchanger. In the kidney, loop transport, selective water permeability and urea recycling contribute to the medullary gradient, while vascular countercurrent exchange limits its washout; water movement is omitted from this finite solute demonstration.

Understand

1. Trace the anatomical pathway

2. Define the mechanism and boundary

The descending thin limb is relatively water permeable, while the thick ascending limb transports salts and is relatively water impermeable. Repeated transport and flow through opposing limbs can build an axial gradient rather than merely equilibrating every compartment. This active/passive arrangement is different from a blood exchanger that encounters an already established gradient.

The original exchanger supplies a constant-volume carrier entering at concentration2. It visits maintained surrounding concentrations4,8,4,2 on a descending-and-return path. At each segment it moves a chosen fraction f toward the local concentration: Cnew=Cold+f(Cenvironment−Cold). Flow times each concentration change is signed solute transfer into the carrier; the environment changes by the opposite amount.

The model does not generate the supplied surrounding concentrations, and keeping them fixed requires external maintenance. It also omits water exchange and real vascular geometry. The useful distinction is that a return path can give back some acquired solute, limiting net removal relative to exit directly from the deep turn, without proving zero washout or explaining the original gradient.

3. Reconstruct the original evidence

At fraction 0.5 and carrier flow 2, concentrations along the four steps are3,5.5,4.75,3.375. Signed solute transfers are+2,+5,−1.5,−2.75 amount/time, totaling+2.75. The carrier returns some acquired solute but still removes2×(3.375−2)=2.75 overall.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Does a countercurrent exchanger automatically create the surrounding concentration gradient?

Reconstruct every signed local transfer and the net carrier/environment balance. Compare deep-turn concentration with final return concentration, then name the loop transport and water mechanisms intentionally missing from this exchanger.

5. Defend a changed metabolic case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

At fraction 0.5 and flow 1, are the concentration sequence and net solute removal the same as at flow 2?

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

The stipulated concentration sequence remains3,5.5,4.75,3.375 because the fractional approach is held fixed. Net carried removal halves to 1.375. In real exchange, flow can also alter equilibration, which this control deliberately does not model.

6. Preserve a bounded explanation

Retain your first prediction, full units and conservation checks, an alternative mechanism and a discriminating observation in the Anatomy course workspace. These invented data are not individual physiological values. Do not perform breath-holding, forced breathing, exercise challenges, urine or blood sampling or personal measurements. Public answer exposure does not establish independent learner or practical competence.

Apply

What is the origin of the4,8,4,2 surrounding sequence in this model?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At fraction 0.5 and flow 1, are the concentration sequence and net solute removal the same as at flow 2?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
