Track renewal without equating surface output with current basal input

Epidermal renewal combines production, differentiation, movement and shedding. Basal progenitor activity supplies cells that change their molecular and structural properties as they move outward. The outer barrier therefore carries a history of earlier production and differentiation, not an instantaneous display of what basal cells are doing now. A count at one layer cannot alone establish the rate in another.

Learning outcome: Compare input 10 versus 15 at b=0.5. Retain the first three simultaneous updates and the complete entry/inventory/shedding balance. Then alter transit fraction without claiming a measured biological time scale.

Starting recap

Connect integumentary and musculoskeletal structures to explicit material, geometric, activation and mechanical boundaries; separate anatomy from clinical and safe-loading claims.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At a=15 and b=0.5, initial shedding is 10. After one update the inventories are 25,20,20 and the next shedding rate is still 10. After two updates they are 27.5,22.5,20; only after the third update does the surface inventory rise to 21.25, giving prospective shedding 10.625.

Open the experiment

Predict

Will the surface shedding rate rise in the same step as an increased basal input?

Track a delayed surface response to changed renewal

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Three original serial cell-equivalent compartments start at 20 each. In each discrete step a enters basal stage, fraction b of each old stage moves onward, and b of old surface stage sheds. Updates are simultaneous; no cell division inside the transit compartments or real skin turnover calibration.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A basal input change need not appear immediately at the surface.

All stage transfers use old values; the output trace is the prospective shedding rate at each recorded state. Initial 60 plus entries equals final inventory plus cumulative shedding. Real differentiation, cell loss and variable transit are more complex.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

1. Identify the structure and functional question

2. Connect architecture, mechanism and assumptions

Our three-stage packet tracks cell-equivalent material rather than every mitosis. Each stage begins at 20 units. During one discrete step, a new units enter stage 1, fraction b of the old stage 1 moves to stage 2, fraction b of old stage 2 moves to stage 3, and fraction b of old stage 3 leaves. All transfers use the previous state simultaneously. Moving material through all stages in one update would remove the intended transit delay.

The conservation check is initial total plus cumulative entries equals current total plus cumulative shedding. At a steady state, each stage must transmit the input a, so its inventory is a/b. This relation does not imply that real cell residence times are identical or that every cell survives. The output trace gives prospective shedding from each recorded state, not cumulative shed material.

A sudden increase in input can enlarge the first compartment before changing the surface output. Real skin additionally changes differentiation, loss, barrier lipids and interactions with immune cells. The model has no wound, pathogen, treatment or individual turnover data. Use it to challenge an inference from delayed observations, not to assess a person’s skin.

3. Reconstruct the original worked case

At a=15 and b=0.5, initial shedding is 10. After one update the inventories are 25,20,20 and the next shedding rate is still 10. After two updates they are 27.5,22.5,20; only after the third update does the surface inventory rise to 21.25, giving prospective shedding 10.625.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Will the surface shedding rate rise in the same step as an increased basal input?

Compare input 10 versus 15 at b=0.5. Retain the first three simultaneous updates and the complete entry/inventory/shedding balance. Then alter transit fraction without claiming a measured biological time scale.

5. Transfer to a changed mechanism or boundary

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

Start all stages at 20 with input 5 and b=0.5. Find the first two state vectors and the eventual steady inventory in each stage.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

First state 15,20,20; second 12.5,17.5,20. Each stage tends to a/b=10. Surface output initially remains 10 even though input has fallen to 5.

6. Retain a bounded functional explanation

Preserve first predictions, settings, complete quantities and an independent observation that could reject the explanation in the Anatomy and Physiology course workspace. Public feedback and invented models are not clinical evaluation, supervised specimen work or independently assessed reasoning. No physical exercise, temperature exposure, electrical stimulation, personal measurements or treatment is requested.

Supporting anatomical mechanism, checked 30 October 2026. Original teaching prose, numerical packets, schematic diagrams and exercises; no real physiological measurement or injury threshold is inferred.

Apply

Immediately after the first update at input 15 and b=0.5, what is the surface-stage inventory?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Start all stages at 20 with input 5 and b=0.5. Find the first two state vectors and the eventual steady inventory in each stage.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
