Separate a barrier from downstream immune removal

Immune defense begins at anatomical boundaries rather than only after an organism enters tissue. Keratinized skin, epithelial junctions, mucus, ciliary movement and chemical secretions contribute different barriers. Resident microbial communities can also affect colonization. Barrier defense and tissue responses interact, but their effects should not be collapsed into one undifferentiated percentage.

Learning outcome: Vary entry and downstream removal separately. Retain each stage’s denominator and explain a composition change that would make the fixed downstream fraction inappropriate.

Starting recap

Trace immune and reproductive anatomy, conserve response, development and integrated-homeostasis ledgers, and distinguish homeostasis, storage, binding and feasible uptake under explicitly supplied nonclinical boundaries.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At entry fraction 0.2,2000 tokens enter and 8000 are excluded. Conditional removal 0.75 removes 1500 of the entrants, leaving 500, or 0.05 of the initial challenge. The three final categories sum to 10000.

Predict

Should a downstream removal fraction be applied to the initial challenge or only to the population that actually reaches it?

Skin and mucosal barriers, secretions and resident communities affect entry, while downstream innate mechanisms respond to what crosses. The token arithmetic is a conditional sequence, not an infection-risk calculation or proof of statistical independence.

Understand

1. Trace the anatomical pathway

2. Define the mechanism and boundary

The original sequence starts with 10000 inert challenge tokens, not actual organisms. A fraction e crosses an external barrier; a downstream process then removes fraction r of those entrants. Remaining tokens are 10000e(1−r). The second fraction is conditional on entry, so applying it to the whole initial challenge would use the wrong denominator.

The calculation does not require an assertion that the two biological mechanisms are statistically independent: the supplied downstream fraction already refers to entrants. If different entrants have different properties, changing the barrier could also change the downstream fraction in reality. Holding it fixed here is a controlled assumption, not proof that the processes never interact.

Pattern-recognition systems, phagocytes, complement and inflammatory signals respond to tissue conditions beyond simple exclusion. The token model contains no replication, virulence, dose response or individual susceptibility, so its residual fraction is not an infection probability. No microorganism collection, exposure or culture is requested.

3. Reconstruct the original evidence

At entry fraction 0.2,2000 tokens enter and 8000 are excluded. Conditional removal 0.75 removes 1500 of the entrants, leaving 500, or 0.05 of the initial challenge. The three final categories sum to 10000.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Should a downstream removal fraction be applied to the initial challenge or only to the population that actually reaches it?

Vary entry and downstream removal separately. Retain each stage’s denominator and explain a composition change that would make the fixed downstream fraction inappropriate.

5. Defend a changed homeostasis case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

At entry 0.3 and downstream removal 0.5, find excluded, removed and remaining tokens.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

Excluded 7000, downstream removed 1500 and remaining 1500 close 10000. The remaining fraction 0.15 is a bookkeeping outcome, not a real infection-risk estimate.

6. Preserve a bounded explanation

Retain your first prediction, full units and conservation checks, an alternative mechanism and a discriminating observation in the Anatomy course workspace. These invented data are not individual physiological values. Do not perform breath-holding, forced breathing, exercise challenges, urine or blood sampling or personal measurements. Public answer exposure does not establish independent learner or practical competence.

The correct remaining fraction is:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At entry 0.3 and downstream removal 0.5, find excluded, removed and remaining tokens.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
