Trace distinct neural and hormonal routes through a feedback axis

The hypothalamus links neural information with endocrine regulation. Anterior pituitary secretion is controlled in part by hypothalamic signals delivered through a portal vascular system; posterior pituitary terminals release hormones synthesized by hypothalamic neurons. Anterior glandular tissue and posterior neural tissue therefore have different anatomical relationships to the hypothalamus. A concrete axis is hypothalamic TRH → anterior-pituitary TSH → thyroid T3/T4. Thyroid hormones feed back negatively on hypothalamic and pituitary signaling. If thyroid response to the same TSH falls, the immediate tendency is lower thyroid output; reduced feedback can then increase upstream drive, without guaranteeing complete restoration. In contrast, posterior-pituitary release of ADH and oxytocin comes from hormones synthesized in hypothalamic neurons and transported to their terminals, not from the same anterior-pituitary tropic relay.

Learning outcome: Compare target gains0.5 and1 at drive 4, then change drive at fixed gain. Retain both equilibrium equations and distinguish the step20 values from exact fixed points.

Starting recap

Identify neural and endocrine pathways, then separate electrochemical equilibrium, signal regeneration, synaptic conductance, receptor binding and secretion–clearance feedback using original bounded evidence.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At a4 and b1, equilibrium H=P=(√17−1)/2≈1.56155. With b0.5 at the same drive, equilibrium H=1 and P=2. A weaker target response lowers H while upstream P rises through reduced feedback.

Compare upstream drive and target-gland response under feedback

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original two-stage relaxed discrete system starts P=H=1. Each simultaneous update: Pnext=.8P+.2a/(1+H); Hnext=.8H+.2bP. Twenty steps. Fixed point satisfies H²+H −ab=0, P=H/b. No delay beyond the explicit update, no saturation or actual endocrine diagnostic thresholds.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Upstream drive and target sensitivity can alter both levels through a coupled feedback loop.

The upstream signal is reduced by target feedback while target production depends on upstream signal. Real hypothalamic-pituitary axes have additional signals, receptor dynamics and delays; this two-stage comparison is not a diagnostic endocrine pattern.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

1. Identify the pathway and causal question

2. Connect structures, signals and assumptions

Thyroid, adrenal cortical and gonadal axes provide examples of pituitary signals stimulating a target gland whose output feeds back upstream. Other endocrine controls, including pancreatic responses to circulating nutrients, do not all follow this three-organ pattern. Negative feedback should be traced through specified signals rather than treating the pituitary as a universal independent commander.

The original reduced two-stage model uses upstream signal P and target signal H. Simultaneous updates are Pnext=0.8P+0.2a/(1+H) and Hnext=0.8H+0.2bP, starting both at 1. Drive a raises upstream production, while gain b changes target response. At equilibrium P=a/(1+H) and H=bP, giving H²+H−ab=0. The positive root and P=H/b provide an independent check on the finite trace.

An altered upstream signal can be a response to changed target feedback rather than the initiating cause. The twenty-step trajectory is not automatically the exact equilibrium. Real axes include additional hormones, delays, rhythms, receptor changes and binding; the supplied signal units and coefficients are not diagnostic patterns or treatment targets.

3. Reconstruct an original worked comparison

At a4 and b1, equilibrium H=P=(√17−1)/2≈1.56155. With b0.5 at the same drive, equilibrium H=1 and P=2. A weaker target response lowers H while upstream P rises through reduced feedback.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can an upstream signal increase because the target response weakened rather than because upstream drive increased?

Compare target gains0.5 and1 at drive 4, then change drive at fixed gain. Retain both equilibrium equations and distinguish the step20 values from exact fixed points.

5. Discriminate a changed mechanism

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

For a2 and b1, find the fixed point. What happens in the displayed trace if it starts at P=H=1?

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

H²+H−2=0 gives H 1 and P 1. The initial state is already the fixed point, so every displayed state remains1. That constancy does not mean the modeled production and removal processes stop.

6. Retain a nonclinical evidence defense

Preserve the first prediction, complete signal or quantity ledger, alternative mechanism and missing observation in the Anatomy and Physiology course workspace. Supplied neural and hormonal values are fictional. Do not perform stimulation, reflex testing, hormone manipulation or personal health measurements. Guided feedback is not independently assessed reasoning or actual practical competence.

Apply

At drive 4 and target gain 0.5, what are equilibrium H and P?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

For a2 and b1, find the fixed point. What happens in the displayed trace if it starts at P=H=1?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
