Distinguish central organization, peripheral pathways and parallel outputs

The central nervous system comprises brain and spinal cord; peripheral nerves and ganglia connect it to receptors and effectors. Afferent pathways carry information toward central processing, while efferent pathways carry commands toward targets. These functional directions do not mean every axon in a named peripheral nerve has the same role: many nerves contain mixed fibers.

Learning outcome: Toggle each edge while retaining the same input. Record which downstream paths remain and name at least one omitted descending or alternative pathway that limits a real anatomical interpretation.

Starting recap

Identify neural and endocrine pathways, then separate electrochemical equilibrium, signal regeneration, synaptic conductance, receptor binding and secretion–clearance feedback using original bounded evidence.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With input present and only the ascending edge disconnected, spinal input and motor output remain 1 while ascending output is 0. Disconnecting the afferent edge instead makes all downstream outputs 0 in this supplied network.

Open the experiment

Predict

Must loss of one ascending branch eliminate every local spinal output in the stipulated circuit?

Experiment

Separate a spinal response from an ascending pathway

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original Boolean pathway R→spinal S, S→motor M and S→ascending B. Input and edges are stipulated; no descending modulation or alternative pathways. This is circuit reasoning, not neurological lesion localization or a reflex test.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

An intact local branch can coexist with a disconnected ascending branch in this supplied circuit.

CNS includes brain and spinal cord; PNS carries peripheral sensory and motor pathways. The abstract circuit omits actual decussation, multiple relays, descending modulation and clinical anatomy, so it cannot localize a real lesion.

Understand

1. Identify the pathway and causal question

2. Connect structures, signals and assumptions

The cerebrum supports distributed sensory, motor and integrative functions; thalamic nuclei relay and process many signals, while the hypothalamus coordinates autonomic and endocrine regulation. Brainstem regions link major pathways and support vital patterning, and the cerebellum contributes to coordination and prediction. The spinal cord contains local circuits as well as ascending and descending pathways. These broad roles overlap; a simple labeled map cannot localize a real neurological condition.

The original circuit has a receptor R feeding spinal relay S, which branches to motor output M and ascending output B. Controls supply an input and optionally remove one edge. If the ascending edge is absent, the local R→S→M path remains. If the afferent edge is absent, neither output receives the input. This is a graph consequence, not evidence that an actual reflex is independent of all brain influence.

Gray matter emphasizes neuronal somata, processes and synapses, whereas white matter contains many myelinated axons; both contain glia and other structures. Oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells support myelin in central and peripheral contexts respectively, while other glia maintain the local environment. Meninges, cerebrospinal fluid and vascular barriers protect and support neural tissue. No personal examination or sensory/reflex challenge is requested.

3. Reconstruct an original worked comparison

With input present and only the ascending edge disconnected, spinal input and motor output remain 1 while ascending output is 0. Disconnecting the afferent edge instead makes all downstream outputs 0 in this supplied network.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Must loss of one ascending branch eliminate every local spinal output in the stipulated circuit?

Toggle each edge while retaining the same input. Record which downstream paths remain and name at least one omitted descending or alternative pathway that limits a real anatomical interpretation.

5. Discriminate a changed mechanism

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

Input is present and only the spinal-to-motor edge is disconnected. Which signals remain?

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

Spinal and ascending signals remain 1, while motor output is 0. The graph distinguishes branches but does not identify a clinical lesion or muscle disorder.

6. Retain a nonclinical evidence defense

Preserve the first prediction, complete signal or quantity ledger, alternative mechanism and missing observation in the Anatomy and Physiology course workspace. Supplied neural and hormonal values are fictional. Do not perform stimulation, reflex testing, hormone manipulation or personal health measurements. Guided feedback is not independently assessed reasoning or actual practical competence.

Apply

Which single disconnected edge removes both downstream outputs in this circuit?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Input is present and only the spinal-to-motor edge is disconnected. Which signals remain?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
