Infer flow only from a complete oxygen balance

A steady organ oxygen balance connects blood flow Q, arterial content Ca, venous content Cv and oxygen uptake U through U=Q(Ca−Cv). This is a conservation relation, not a statement that partial-pressure difference equals content difference. If the organ stores oxygen during the observation interval or another source contributes, the simple steady equation needs additional terms.

Learning outcome: Compare denominator changes with numerator changes. Derive the two extrema explicitly, retain units and identify a storage or sampling observation that would invalidate the steady inference.

Starting recap

Trace cardiovascular and respiratory anatomy, conserve pressure-flow and gas-content ledgers, and distinguish transport, storage, binding and feasible uptake under explicitly supplied nonclinical boundaries.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Infer flow from a complete oxygen mass balance

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original arterial content fixed 10; steady uptake U=Q(Ca−Cv), no storage or other source. Q=U/(10−Cv). Uptake uncertainty ±1 and venous-content uncertainty ±0.5 are independent allowed bounds, not statistical confidence intervals. Arterial content exact in this packet.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Steady uptake divided by the content difference identifies flow only under the supplied mass-balance assumptions.

The extrema pair smaller uptake with larger content difference and vice versa; they are allowed ranges, not confidence intervals. Nonsteady storage, uncertain arterial content or sampling mismatch would require a different inference.

Understand

1. Trace the anatomical pathway

2. Define the mechanism and boundary

The original packet fixes Ca=10 and varies uptake and venous content, always retaining a positive arterial–venous difference. Flow inferred from central values is U/(10−Cv), and extraction fraction is(10−Cv)/10. Uptake has amount/time units, content amount/volume and the quotient volume/time. Using saturation fractions without a capacity conversion would break the amount balance.

The supplied uncertainty bounds are uptake±1 and venous content±0.5, independently allowed. The smallest possible flow combines the smallest uptake with the largest content difference, while the largest flow combines the largest uptake with the smallest difference. These are deterministic extrema over a rectangular allowed set, not a statistical confidence interval.

An apparently high inferred flow can result from a small denominator; independent measurement and matched arterial/venous sampling matter. Real circulation is heterogeneous and time-dependent. This on-screen inverse problem does not estimate a person’s cardiac output or certify a measurement technique; it asks which quantities and assumptions make an inference identifiable.

3. Reconstruct the original evidence

At uptake 12 and venous content 6, content difference 4 gives flow 3 and extraction0.4. The allowed bounds give minimum11/4.5=22/9≈2.44444 and maximum13/3.5=26/7≈3.71429 volume/time.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Which combination of uptake and venous-content bounds produces the largest inferred flow?

Compare denominator changes with numerator changes. Derive the two extrema explicitly, retain units and identify a storage or sampling observation that would invalidate the steady inference.

5. Defend a changed transport case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

At uptake 6 and venous content 8, find central flow and the two allowed extrema.

Difference2 gives central flow 3. Minimum5/2.5=2 and maximum7/1.5=14/3≈4.66667. A narrow content difference amplifies the range; these are not confidence limits or clinical measurements.

6. Preserve a bounded explanation

Retain your first prediction, full units and conservation checks, an alternative mechanism and a discriminating observation in the Anatomy course workspace. These invented data are not individual physiological values. Do not perform breath-holding, forced breathing, exercise challenges, blood sampling or personal measurements. Public answer exposure does not establish independent learner or practical competence.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
